Hi,
joseywales is correct,
I have, also, seen red marker lights on the front of steam locomotives.
Please, can anyone inform us of what does this indicate?
Thank you,
Ralph
CWEX,
10-04, thank you.
The model steam locomotive, I saw, had red jewel lights in the front, one on either side of its' headlamp.
Those, were the only lights, other than the head lamp, on the loco's. front, so evidently this loco. should have only gone in reverse, unless someone would add 'Classification' lights to the front, in addition to the red lamps and headlamp.

Here was a discussion on this from earlier this year...class lights discussion.
10-04,
Thank you CWEX for the link.

Each rr had their own set of rules, though most were similar. Here's an example that I found of the 1943 Southern Railway.
While not always prototypical, on toy trains they certainly dress up the front of the loco, any color.
I like lights, so I light them if I can. I usually use green for the class lights, and the markers down on the pilot I'll light in red.
Green seems appropriate to me, there's always another train coming behind this one, usually the same one on the next trip around the loop!
Ain't it the truth, the engines on my layout keep going in circles it seems...
