Hi Guys,
It's been a while but I'm back....and I can say I told you so....here's a picture of my latest acquisition.....a USA Trains 89' enclosed auto rack.
Of course it's 1/29 scale as you old timers that know me, know I left 'O' scale several years ago.
I told you so, because I predicted 1/29 G scale would have a full length auto rack before 'O' scale.
I am happy to see Lionel coming out with one and will go to P&D hobby shop to see one when they come out. But it will be hard to beat this car however, since it has the detail of a brass car.
This is an awesome model with working end doors and the side panels have the holes in them so you can see thru the car.
I removed the couplers that came with it and will install body mount couplers soon.
Enjoy,
Brian Briggs

That is a beauty! I've been staring at them since delivery. I haven't pulled the trigger yet. They are big. I was hoping for one in 1/32 scale by someone else or scratch built. Now, it looks like I may need bigger curves for them to look right.
Charlie,
Nice car, and they actually also ran behind second generation diesels.
Brian
Brian do you plan on lowering the car?
Hi Brian, got mine back in November. It is AWESOME!!! Glad to see so many G scalers on the forum. Here's some pics of mine and the curve is 10 foot diameter. It doesn't look too bad and handles the curve very nicely with some 60 foot cars.
That mess in the background is my so called train room.

Got several unpainted brass autoracks on e-bay.
Converted to 3-rail and painted and decaled for PRR service.
There are some nice examples in Morning Sun Books -PRR Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipoment -- volume 2 pgs126 & 127
Such a tease. You guys are mean.
Had my Lionel set on order for months now.
Patrick,
Yes, I'll eventually lower it. No hurry since I have nowhere to run it currently. It sits .2 too high as is. It comes with 36" wheels so putting on correct 33" wheels will lower it by .052. The rest shouldn't be too hard to achieve.
Rick,
They are nice cars....I'd have bought a BN car but I don't want the TTX flatcar, it's too new for my modeling era.
Brian
Looks like a nice car
Rick, which SD70MAC's in the box? Just started getting some.
Joe, I have a Norfolk Southern and a CSX SD70MAC. I actually bought the NS by mistake. Have yet to run either one. Maybe when I get my loop finished I will. Right now, meaning this week, I'm converting my Z-4000 to DC to run my G scale stuff and my 2 rail O scale stuff.
Rick
If you wanted a SP heritage instead, I just got one. I bet that NS is handsome. Doesn't it have the white face? (above the low hood). I've got a MTH NS DASH8 G scale that's good lokking as well.
I got the USA CSX SD70MAC myself and added MTH PS to it. I wanted another CSX so I may paint it and add flared radiators. Someone here will probably call me out for something incorrect......or a mad SP fan!!!
I run my 2 rail O on AC power. I switched the G scale recently to DC. I didn't notice any change.
Joe, I wanted to get an MTH Dash 8 but didn't know how it would look against the 1:29 scale trains. How do you feel it looks to you when compared, size wise, against the 1:29 engines? It the size difference that noticeable or not?
Rick
In general it's not too bad.

That's my engines running both scales. Now that I got more modern 1/29 scale engines, the difference is much bigger. When I put the modern ones together they don't look right. The rolling stock is more forgiving at 5'! I think I'll be running consists of each scale separate in the future. I won't give up on MTH G yet. I love the control system and wait for more modern releases. I've got their G gauge steamers too.

Hmmm, I can't find the pics. They must be on the old computer so I took some more. Now I see the camera (me) doesn't capture the look of the size difference well.

Too bad you boys were not around when I was making them
I was making b i-level so the buyers could use the stupid 1:43 vehicles available.
If I may, I wish all Merry Christmas, and Happy any appropriate Holidays at this time of year.
I have not been modeling for quite a while now, as my time is taken in restoring a fiberglass "Kit Car" that I built in 1960-61

good to hear from you Ed. how about some pix of the car?
Merry Christmas as well!
Merry Christmas to you Ed!!!
actually Ed, I meant your 'kit car'
What a tease thanks, now I'm really dying to see the Lionel version of the auto racks. It was stated to be full length in their catalog.
Happy Holiday's to All.
I managed to get hold of three Lykens Valley ATSF Tri-level auto rack kits. Two appear to be complete while I'll need to make bolsters for the third one. I've been thinking of duplicating the stanchions in resin so that an Atlas 89-foot flat could be used as a base for a bi-level or tri-level auto rack.
The modern fully-enclosed auto racks are nice, but lack the character of the open ones. The down side is that the open ones weigh a ton after you fill them with cars.

I hope you guys are OK that I'm posting this here. The original poster too. I'm trying to capture the scale thing. For some reason it looks different in person?
