I have a G the L L but there are two buttons. One green and one red. I think it's the green button that gets pushed, many time, to get Gabe to the top. The red button lets him come down. There is no red knob however. I have found that if the voltage is too low, he doesn't have the strength to make that final rung, on the ladder.
Pretty sure it's working as designed. Are you sure this one was automatic at some point in the past?
The MTH one you have to turn the knob for the light to come on. The Lionel (AF) one there is a micro switch at the top and they go on automatically when he arrives.
At least that was how mine worked when I had it. I sold my MTH one because I also preferred the automatic lighting as he arrived at the top, so I kept the Lionel (AF) one.

I must add some info to my previous post. My version is the Lionel produced accessory. That's why no knob on mine.
Hi guy`s, thanks for all your replies, the one i have is the Railking by MTH, it has 3 knobs, i tried this evening to get it to work until i realised that it is not like the AF version, this one you have to turn the red knob on the left side of the controller to light it up, the other 2 work like the older models, green to go up, small red to go down, fell like i have egg on my face, lol, any way, thanks for all your kind answers, Phil
Here are the instructions for the MTH 30-9120 Gabe. We have it on the museum layout. It is a favorite once the button sequence is learned.
