There is a lionel dummy coupler knuckle, used to run duel tenders. It slips on a standard drawbar reciever and has a set screw. This could open up a path to a workaround .  I also had one with a vertical slot for the loco drawbars or tin plate tab couplers, but have no clue who made it or when. The tender adaptor is still listed by Lionel last I checked, but sorry, by old computer had the part number, not me. (Though searching for, coupler, adapter or adaptor, (both because I can't spell), and tender might get the number at Lionels site, and with my ID or ADXRob's here might get that part number here. Royboy may have posted it once too.

Kaydee shafts are pretty small though, so they stand a chance of working and looking better too. Make sure it's a lobster claw comparable version or be ready to add one the the car also.
