I screwed up and accidentally drilled through and destroyed the enameled copper wire of my 282R gantry crane coil & bracket p/n 282-156 (see pic).

I may end up rewinding the coil of my 282-156.

A few questions please:

  1. Do you know of a source for the correct type/gauge of enameled copper wire?
  2. How do I determine the gauge of the 282-156 enameled copper wire?
  3. The internet shows enameled copper wire, and enameled “magnetic” copper wire. Is there a difference?

Thanks much,

Rick

1-Do a Google search, lots of places have it.  You obviously need to know what gauge you need.  When you unwind it, remember to count the turns.  Aliexpress.com has mountains of it in all sizes.

2-You need to measure the diameter of the wire, do you have an accurate set of calipers?  Here's a Wire Diameter vs Gauge Chart.

3-They're the same, just different terms.

Gents, What would be your suggestion for someone with a 1990's vintage gantry crane that appeared to be "NOS" when purchased at a train show, but the magnet doesn't work?   All the other functions work fine, the magnet just won't come on.   I don't see any wire damage, separation, kink, or disconnect.   I'm not willing/able to follow through with the above.   Nothing looks oxidized or as though anything is wrong.  In fact, it really looks NOS out of the box.   Should I attempt to track down a new magnet (if somebody even makes that) or something of the sort?   Suggestions...   Thx.
