I model the steam era, but am very interested in the many varieties of internal combustion rail critters that arose simultaneously with the automobile about 1900 and then operated widely on steam lines.  The only one I have ridden was about 1980 on a Washington's Birthday "Coming Out" on the East Broad Top.  I have passed the track of a tourist road I understood was running a repo of an Edwards car in W. Va., and heard of an EMC-St. Louis car operating in....Wisconsin? 

The Strasburg for a while had around their shops a little rail car that operated on a line not far west of there. I don't

think the Strasburg was offering rides on it. The Cailfornia Western has operated various railcars, but neither time I was

there several years ago were they running (and California is a "fur piece")  Where today are there tourists roads running gas electrics regularly, on weekends, or??  Is there a list published?

PRR 4666, a Brill Model 660, is in-process of restoration at the Black River & Western shops in Ringoes, NJ by its private owner. A fellow club member who works on the BRW has told me much progress has been made on it and it may not be too many more years before she runs again.

 

I have one of the NJCB Brill 660 doodlebugs, repowered with a Wagner drive. Lettered for PRR 4669, I love it. GHB models imported a Brill Model 250 some years ago. It is also an impressive model. Another club member has one with Magic Carpet drives and she purrs right along.

 

The EBT car is operable in very good shape the last time I saw it.   At the time, they only brought it out to run on the EBT Fall Reunions.   I saw it run a few trips when I made it to that event.

 

The EBT has not run this year due to a contract disagreement between the new operator and the owner.   The owner has announced that it will run again and this will be worked out.

 

Most if not all of the PRR gas-electrics were converted to Diesel after WWII I believe.    The PRR had a collision where the operator running one near Akron OH was thought to have fallen asleep and ran head-on into an I1 (2-10-0) pulling a freight.   I think each was going about 30-35 mph.   The gas tank on the gas-electirc ruptured and the gasoline caught fire.    There were many injuries and I think some fatalities.   After that PRR started converting them to Diesel-Electrics.

Actually it was horrific accident where all the horribly burned to death except for the engineer, fireman and a railroad employee who jumped at the last minute. 

There is still a memorial in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio today.

The engineer did not remember that orders where to take the siding and claimed him and the crew may have been/ had carbon monoxide poisoning.

Was just browsing the Strasburgh web site and they have the railcar scheduled to run o.n November 4-6, 12, 1,& 2.

"The restored 1915 Lancaster, Oxford & Southern Railcar was originally used on a three-foot gauge track in Southern Lancaster County. We put her on our tracks for several days in March and November - when we're not running our steam train"
