I have sufficient "whimsy" on my layout, that, when Lionel offered the smaller GCT, i leapt at the opportunity to get one.  When it finally arrived, i realized it was just a little too small to have the impact i was looking for; it was sort of overwhelmed by the other structures.  i played with the idea of building some sort of base for it, but quickly realized anything i could to do raise the building would still leave it "less" that the surroundings.

When Brian (Passenger Train Collector) proposed a base constructed by celebrated modeler Harry Heike, I once again leapt at the opportunity.

It arrived last week and i have been working at incorporating it into the layout.  This was not a small task.  Recent health issues have diminished my abilities somewhat and a couple of surprises challenged me, too.  Key among these was the fact that my terminal building did not fit into the space intended to receive it on Harry's base.  Turns out my terminal building was not quite square.

I really appreciate Brian facilitating the project and I enjoyed my first interaction with Harry.  It was fun to collaborate with him on the lighting package.

Harry, "What about this?"

Me, "Yes!"

Harry, "What about this?"

Me, "Yes!"

Personally, I am thrilled with the results.  This gives the facility the presence a city railroad terminal should have.  The eye is drawn to it, but it doesn't dominate the scene.

I modified the lighting in the Terminal with some structure LED's from Royztrains.

Some things you may notice.

It is in Central Florida, not NYC

It is operating as a station, not a terminal.

Trains arrive and depart from in front instead of behind.

WHO CARES?  I certainly don’t!!!

Have some details to fix (the Union Station sign, for instance) and will work on doing additional photography in the days to come.  A night shot with a passenger train on one of the tracks comes to mind.

Forrest, when I proposed this project to Harry, I knew it would be good, but in this case it isn't just good, it is sensational. What you have done with it on your layout is terrific.

Thanks for your input on this project as well. After looking at your installation, we can't wait to get ours installed as well.

Thanks for posting your photos.

Forrest,

This is very nice!  After seeing the proportion of the base and the level of detail, I decided it wasn't for me.  I was looking at it from the perspective of - the sheer proportion of the HH base in relation to the Lionel GCT eclipses the majesty that the real GCT has sitting atop its "base."  But I must confess, the way you were looking at it - something that is whimsy and yet still helps bring a city to life without overwhelming the scene - was visionary!  You've really accomplished that goal.  You've added a cool new dimension of "city" character to your layout in an imaginative way.  Thanks for sharing.

This is a beautiful marriage between the Lionel GCT model and the base created by Harry Heike. What Forrest has done to place it on his layout in a predominate setting only serves to enhance this union.

The coloring is spectacular and the entire unit makes a wonderful addition to Forrest's layout.

I am of the same opinion.  However, I'm going to order it anyway as there is no other option for it besides making one myself.  And the building alone just doesn't work alone.  I think it will work OK for me because I plan to place it in the far back corner of the layout so maybe this will help the perspective.

A couple of more shots.  The first one is roughly the same vantage point as the first one in this thread, but with a lower and significantly pulled back prospective to give you a sense of how it looks on the layout as a whole.  To me, it is a perfect fit.

The second is the promised night shot with a passenger train.  The California Zephyr is arriving on Track 3.

I previously saw the small Lionel GCT at the hobby shop. It is under-impressive and over-priced IMO. But, with the base it would make an impressive city structure. If I find one at a price I am comfortable with then I'll order the base.
