I have a Lionel C&O SD-28 diesel engine from 1994 that has a stripped nylon worm gear in the drive truck.  Apparently, 2 hours of operation caused the brass worm gear on the motor shaft to strip the nylon gear on the axle.  Is the nylon gear replaceable?  If so, does anyone have a part number and/or source for the part?  I also cannot figure out how to get the axle out of the plastic truck housing...do I need a wheel puller?   Thanks!

I believe the gear is 610-8806-576, or that this gear should atleast suffice. They are not available from Lionel proper, but @Harry Henning of Henning's Trains, a forum sponsor, has it in brass: https://hennings-trains.shopli...-brass-13647485.html

You will want a wheel puller and you will need to get crafty with a cobbled backing plate (I've been known to use a small socket) to position the gear on the axle. You can use a vice to gently press the wheels back onto the axle (although a proper press may be preferred).

Thanks Chuck and bmoran4!  Using the center punch and more force than I would have thought necessary, I was able to get the wheel off, and I've ordered a new brass gear from Henning's Trains.  I'll use my vise to press the wheel back on after I put the new gear in.

Your rapid and very helpful responses prove once again that this forum is the best!!!
