Does anyone know where you can get replacement gears for Williams before Bachman or suggest how to keep them from spinning on axle. The ones I have are both cracked and therefore spin on the axle

Might want to check on the Bachmann forum under ask the Bachmann/Williams.
I have heard that somebody bought all the pre Bachmann parts for Williams and he lives in Maryland.
FYI, I have not heard of any Williams having the problem you have stated. Did you buy it new or used? If bought used try returning to the person you bought it from. Most gears on Williams are all metal so gear failure is very rare if ever.

Many years back I bought an EP-5 power-dummy combo. The powered unit had the same issue. The geared wheels were loose and spun independently of the gear. I called Willams (pre Bachmann) and they sent me a new truck which I installed. That largely cured the problem, though that motor still runs a bit rough compared to my many other Williams locos.
If you can order a power truck from Bachmann it should fix your problem. If you are still under warrantee they should send you one free.
Contact Charlie Phillips at 717-564-8633.
He's got lots and lots of Williams parts and they are very attractively priced.
I had also an EP5 with a gear problem. The stud that the gear rides on was loose in the hole. I washed everything, knurled the end of the stud and pressed it back in with a touch of Locktite. It never came out again.
Richard, are your referring to the gear on the axle that the motor engages? I just checked mine and its brass. if yours are plastic you might be able to replace the whole wheelset with one with a brass gear. Charlie Phillips, mentioned above is a good bet.
