General #3 cow catcher

Has anyone removed the cow catcher? How do I remove the cow catcher? Has anyone modified a cow catcher to install a coupler? Does the coupler have to be attached to the pilot wheels? Tried attaching a swiveling coupler to the catcher but kept derailing the car coupled to it. Will appreciate any guidance.
