Although I wish I had a layout - I don't. Maybe someday I will but for now I'm just a an autograph collector and Presidential buff. I would like to buy one of the soon to be produced reissues of teh Bush 4141. Which is a better display unit? The Lionel or the MTH? I imagine that Lionel is preferable because of the history associated with it. Which unit has better detail and looks more realistic? If you were never going to run it, then I'd buy a 2 rail MTH model with fixed pilots and put it on the shelf.

Actually, for display purposes only, you might be better served with an H.O. model without DCC (lower cost) and a full set of UP Excursion cars from Kato, which includes the flag baggage car which carried President Bush's casket. Display the train as a whole on a long shelf. For the locomotive only, the MTH unit will display well because of the smaller flanges on the wheels and the fixed pilots. Iinstall ProtoCraft couplers as they look better, but some cutting/filing may be required to fit them into the pilots.
Matt, to the best of my knowledge, Kato only made the excursion train in N scale. Walthers made the train in HO scale but it was about 4 years ago and the stuff is pretty hard to find now. They might re-release it
