They kept the passenger engines clean, but the Alcos did not get daily scrubs in their later life, and, though washed, did accumulate some soot.  The EMD's and the F-M Train Masters did not put out all that oily exhaust, and stayed very clean.

 

The freight engines were filthy, except for the ones which only ran on the Sunset Route and never went through any tunnels.
