I won't steal your trolley thread but can tell you that I 100% can relate.  My brother and I spent over a grand getting the train that my father bought in 1950 up and running again.  I am in possession of it, not the 'owner' of it - I call it the "Family Train".

I host an annual Train Party around Christmas time (when my layout is up).  It started 22 years ago with the express purpose of having everyone in the family getting to see the Family Train running again.  It's on my layout every year without exception.

Like you, it is really special to all of us.

I can second that.  My father's childhood train was a Lionel 252 that he was given in 1929.  It never ran for as long as I was aware of it, and by the time I inherited it, it was in pieces.  My mother almost threw it away, but I took it and spent some time and money repairing and restoring it  This was the result:

Sadly, Dad did not see his train run again in this life.  But I've always hoped he can see it now.
