Recently I have become interested in Pennsylvania GG1 Locomotives. Somewhere there is a photo of myself on the end of one at Altoona and of coarse there is the one a Strasbourg. I tend to like to model true to scale and the Lionel ones just didn't look right to me. I bought a shell of a GG1 that was made by Mr. Ed Duddy and I am told there also was a man named Alexander who made models of these engines. I need a set of drive wheels and I will either have to make a set of frames or possibly I can find some that Mr. Duddy or Mr Alexander made. Lionel drivers for these engines only have six spokes while in reality these drivers had seven spokes. If anyone has some old parts for theses engines could you let me know if you are willing to sell them and how much you would hope to get for the parts. Apparently the Ed Duddy shells are nineteen and a quarter inches so at a scale if 1/4 inch to the foot these shells are about three feet short of the seventy nine feet six inches a real GG1 was.

Thanks,

   Bob

Hi Bob. You should be able to locate parts for the House of Duddy GG1 shell you have. I've seen it posted that they crop up on eBay from time to time.

Lionel, MTH, and Williams also make some very nice scale-length Gs that are well detailed and operate flawlessly. Even have operating pantographs and die-cast shells on the Lionel and MTH models.

The Williams G1 is very reasonably priced and comes with twin motors and an electronic E-Unit. Shell is plastic with great graphics.Easily upgraded to either of the command systems too.

Weaver made some scale brass models back in the 1990s that are excellent pieces and good runners.

The Lionel 'JLC' Series of scale Gs are actually about 1/4 - 3/8" longer than the others and have nicer detailed drive wheels.

Do a search for 'GG1' and you should come across a long-running thread with just about everything you need to know about the brute...

Thanks for the info and some great photos. Finding parts seems harder if you are going to look for specific Lionel engines like a JLC model. I have no idea what rule 17 is so I probably already broke that law. A drive train for a Duddy GG1 went for over $250 on eBay very recently, and at those prices I wish I had got a Williams scale unit instead. I am the kind of guy who thinks I can make things rather than having the cash to buy everything in life. It is a case of God trying to teach me patience.

Rule 17 lighting is actually a lot more complicated than just dimming the headlight when stopped, but that's the easiest to do and what Lionel Legacy does as well.

Dimming Headlight
Except when the engine is approaching and passing over a public crossing at grade, dim the headlight during any of the following conditions:

1. At stations and yards where switching is being done.
2. When the engine is stopped close behind another train.
3. In non-signaled territory, when the engine is stopped on the main track waiting for an approaching train.
4. When approaching and passing the head end and rear end of a train on the adjacent track.
5. At other times to permit passing of hand signals or when the safety of employees requires.
