I have had a conversation with Scott Mann on what paint scheme he should make the North Coast Limited in. He is looking for opinions on what paint scheme he should go with/ sell the best Pre 1954 or post 1954. What is everyone's opinion?

The post-1954 Raymond Loewy scheme, with dome cars, for sure! I already ordered a GGD NP Slumbercoach in anticipation of such a train...
The first O scale version of one of the most beautiful trains that ever rode the rails or that "Butter Knife" scheme. Seriously?
Both are great, but the Loewy scheme gets my dollars.
Loewy
I, too, prefer the Loewy scheme with the Vista Domes and would invest in such a set.
RTR Mark
Loewy v/Vista domes all the way!
But didn't GGD just release a NP "finish set" for some of the ala carte NP coaches they produced about 3 years ago? I ended up selling 3 coaches 'cause i got tired of waiting for the finish-set. Aside from matching motive power, why would Scott be that interested in another North Coast Ltd train in the same paint scheme so soon?
David
I would buy a set in the pre-1954 paint scheme. K-Line already made the post-1954 scheme, in 21" scale length, with domes. I have the K-Line set, and while it is not perfect, it is not too far off. So, I would only be interested in the pre-1954 paint scheme.
Pre 54 No domes. some heavyweights as new cars arrived. No one has done a accurate NorthCoast In O to my knowledge. Fidelity to prototype is my issue windows in right places cars that ran on the NP. Finish sets are not even close to correct.
I will cast my vote to pre 1954.
The cars aren't much good without engines to pull them. Extremely hard to find pre-54 engines.
Decal sets from micro scale and paint from tru scale not hard to do.

Maybe 3rd Rail could do a run of F7s using their existing tooling. Were there F7s in that scheme?
The pre-1954 scheme is really beautiful and unique, IMO. The post 1954 scheme has been done so much, it just seems like overkill to offer it again.

This basically what I stated in my email to him.
Would it be possible to offer a basic set of cars common to both paint schemes and then also offer a set of just dome cars with the post 1954 scheme. I really would like to have both schemes .
Have to dig more books out but I like that idea Purplepapa. But if memory serves me the arrival of streamline cars coincides with switch in paint. Although it was possible to find pine tree scheme later as not all cars were repainted. Not against the scheme, just all the previous offers were of generic cars painted to look like the Loewy scheme. Now I don't no about you guys but when I have 3 ,4 High end varnish streamliners sitting in the station and they are all the same when I know they were different it bugs me. Like a PRR full dome, or domecar. I can build anything, have been watching Scotts progress on streamline car production especially Budd due to the fluting, time is right for the first accurate O scale NorthCoast in either scheme. If its produced it will be my only purchase of the year. still slightly dejected about nonexistent prototypical details on the F7's that I paid so much for, could have got a lot of scratch building junk for that amount of bread. But don't take it as sour grapes , as I've said before they run and pull all the heavy arse cars I build. With time and a few parts they will look just like the ones in the picture books. PS sold all my MTH for that reason and they were too short.
Seems like the streamline cars were pretty prevalent in the original scheme:
The NP took delivery of 77 (including cars for the CB&Q and SP&S) streamlined cars for the NCL during 1947 and 1948.
The next batch of NCL cars started delivery in 1954, these would have been delivered in the Loewy scheme

Thank you Rusty!!!,,
more paint schemes in the run Yes.
And well if I could I would rather not have to build them!
So I'd probably buy both.. Shhhh Nudge Nudge know what I mean?
Rusty, Where can I find pictures of those Pine tree Streamliners?
Thanks and all info Helps.
The pre 1954 livery looks in-tree-ging!

I Googled up that image. There's not a lot of color photo's of the pre-Loewy NCL online.

Brandon Cole,
I have always been partial to the two tone Green NP Passenger Cars, pulled by the NP GP/7 or GP/9 in the original Pittsburgh Steelers Color Scheme, in fact I own both the original Conventional and the new Legacy Engine , along with the Lionel 2 tone Green NP Passenger Train. The NP North Coast Limited pictured in the photo above, would be way cool also.

I have just sent this link to Scott Mann in an email.
Hopefully this helps his decision.
Lets review Consist for 1954+
I already know that I will make a 4 car set from the Domed Coach and Sleepers from the GN Empire Builder.
What do you suggest for the other 4 cars in the NCL Set?
Scott Mann
Just got got this email from Scott. What do you think guys?
Well, it seems like Scott is suggesting that he favors the Lowey scheme. So...
- Baggage (for Seattle)
- Mail Dormitory (for Seattle)
- Dome Coach Car 250 (for Seattle)
- Coach Car 251 (for Seattle)
- Coach Car 254 (for Seattle)
- Coach Car 253 (for Portland)
- Dome Coach Car 252 (for Portland)
- “Lewis & Clark Traveller’s Rest” Buffet-lounge car (for Seattle)
- Diner (for Seattle)
- Dome Sleeper Car 256 4 Double Berooms, 4 Duplex Single Rooms, 4 Roomettes (rebuilt to Dome Lounge Sleepers “Lounge in the Sky” in 1967—car always for Seattle)
- Sleeper Car 258 8 Duplex Roomettes, 6 Roomettes, 4 Double Bedrooms (for Seattle)
- Sleeper Car 257 8 Duplex Roomettes, 6 Roomettes, 4 Double Bedrooms (for Portland)
- Dome Sleeper Car 258 4 Double Berooms, 4 Duplex Single Rooms, 4 Roomettes (for Seattle)
- Sleeper Lounge Observation Car 259 4 Double Bedrooms, 1 Compartment (for Seattle—discontinued after 1967)
Considering the Q and the NP were Hill roads, were the NCL quarter domes like the ones GN ordered? Looks like the cars sides are smooth!
Soo Line also had a scheme that was called Pine Tree. A bit different from NP, of course. The NP freight scheme had a wraparound Pine Tree with a red outline. The link at the bottom is a home movie from the 50s showing NP passenger consists including the older NCL scheme.

ATERRY11, is there a vendor for the domes you are using? I need a couple for a project and would welcome any information you have for them. If you prefer, you can email me via the address in my profile. Thanks.
Mr. Pingman, these kits are becoming Hens teeth. I think you can still get the Mac shops Dome wrapper from P&D or Desplaines, the extrusions and the kits Mo Line and Mac Shops pop up on the bay once in awhile. Considering the complexity of the assembly. The prices are not cheap. took me and the kid 3 years to find 2 for our North Coast project. But As I have found sometimes Just ask and they will crawl out of the wood work.. these are domed coaches and the Harder to find Domed sleepers are still on our list.. Although Sani at #rd rail is about to get all my hobby money for the foreseeable future once the consists are sorted out for the GN Empire and the NP North Coast. If you go the kit route Happy filing and the info helps. Aterry11
I purchased one of the Budd dome wrappers from Haynes McDaniel (Mac Shops) about 2-3 years ago. Bob Lavezzi (All about Trains), a dealer from NJ who attends York TCA, Strasburg, and Chicago shows had several Midland dome sleeper kits at the Cleveland show last October 31st. A friend of mine purchased one and has it mostly completed.
If anyone is interested in contacting Bob Lavezzi I suggest doing so through the New York Society of Model Engineers.

Aterry11, I apologize for my misleading query. Specifically, I intended to ask about the vista domes only-- source and dimensions; not the dome "cars" themselves. I have some old 21" aluminum extrusions that need domes and have been trying to source the vista domes for them.
I regret the confusion, and thank you for your earlier reply.

Agreed. It could be a color balance issue with the image, or just bad paint matching. Either way, it's not even close.

Also, the Z scale set is all heavyweights. But the NP had full streamlined sets in the pre-1954 scheme. Photos seem to be scarce, though.

Yeah, saw that photo. But it still shows some heavyweight cars in the consist, and it is from 1952. It would be nice to see an all streamlined consist in color. I think that I have seen them, but only in B&W.
