I am having some problems with the wheelsets in some of my 11 heavyweight cars.

In some of the 3 wheel trucks, one axle spins free, the second will spin but stops when you do, and the third is won't spin or is very hard to turn.

On some of the 2 axle trucks, some spin free and the other is hard to turn.

I have oiled ALL axle's twice already. Is there a way to try to widen the truck frames to allow the wheelsets to spin free. I can set a passenger car on a downward slope and it will not roll.

We looked at each truck tonight and I see alot of small screws on these trucks, has anyone else had this problem or do you know of a fix to help make these wheelsets roll better.

Thank You...

you can dissasemble these trucks, I'd look for:

•non-parallel sideframes, both lengthwise and vertically

•non-straight sideframes

•poorly cast axle holes in sideframes

•wheelset axles of different lengths

that being said, I've had not had that issue on both 2 & 3 axle GGD trucks, which leads me to think they're binding from being pinched.

I have not had an issue with rolling wheels on mine either.   And I think they have delrin bearing inserts in the truck journals.

I agree with PRR Man, it sounds as if the trucks have been pinched on one end bending the side frame to a too tight position.   You could try a quick check by measuring at both ends of the truck to see if they are the same distance apart.    If they are not, then this is the problem.    I'm not sure how to fix since it is a casting.   YOu might try disassembling the truck and very slowly and carefully straightening out the side frame.    the danger is breaking the sideframe.

Also, you might find that the side frame are not bent, just mounted crookedly.   You might be able to loosen the screws mounting the sideframes to the bolster and realign the sides without disassembly.    Just get them free rolling, and retighten the screws.

GGD/Sunset 3Rd Rail does have a repair capability.    You could contact them and ask about sending them in for repair.
