Give your "York Report".

First timer, here.  We (wife and I) spent the 3-1/2 hrs. my knees could stand and saw only the Orange Hall.  Met Mike Wolf, then Mike Reagan, and Dennis Zander at Z-Stuff for Trains. 

Bought SOME stuff- mostly on my list, but found a great weathered Atlas boxcar - not on my list - from an outfit in Kentucky (Hobby Station, Tim Coyle).  I added to my storage by buying 4 sections of aluminum racking from Glen Snyder Display Systems and saved some serous shipping cost in the process.  The wife and I gave up after the knees gave out.  Tomorrow- we attack the "Member's Halls"!!

Not really looking for anything this trip.  What i buy has to stay in the garage for a while, because I'm out of train storage space.  Picked up a few MPC cars i like that were $10. Bought some brand new LTI cars Wed for $6 just to get their frames and sprung trucks (relax eddie and mallard, I bought them in York).  Picked up a new smoking tank car for $25, a pair of new Santa Fe diesels for $75, a new musical christmas boxcar for $10, and a kline mint steam engine with railsounds and tmcc for 125.  Hopefully that will be it.

I suspect it’s because we’re all getting older and need our beauty rest.     It’s also starting earlier........we (  the 7 of us from the River City 3 Railers) got there at 6:15 and it was already mobbed......

Anybody there that supplies backdrops??  I didn't see anyone in Orange Hall.

Middle of orange hall not far from mth, there's a place that had nice 10 ft long back drops, a ton of them

The sellers cut the price on the 3 items I bought without me even asking. Call me stupid, but I'm willing and able to pay a "fair" price for "toys". In fact, I insisted in paying the full price for one item because it was so under-priced to start with.

Yes, best prices I've gotten in long time on older stuff, wish I was there today but had  to work, maybe taking my son tomorrow.  I haven't been on a Saturday since they added Thursday lol

I missed my first York in 26 years of attending due to having shingles this week. Too weak, bad headaches. On meds and feeling a little better. There is always April

Bill - you left right before the bachelorette party came in for a nightcap!  Seeing as how your better half was with you it was probably best you had left.  Locolawyer and myself managed to keep them entertained.

When we left Ed Boyle, Dennis Brennan and a few others were still there....this was around 11:00.

Met Steve Eastman (whose posts I have enjoyed for years), ran into Dave Minarik, and as I was walking out of Red I spotted the standard gauge Commodore Vanderbilt that I had been looking for.  Negotiated a good price - it has to ride in the back seat because it will not fit into the trunk (after spending 15 minutes emptying everything).  Spent an enjoyable hour at the OGR presentation.  Although the crowd seemed good, the place was really thinning out at 3pm on Friday.

First day was great breakfast, great lunch, and great dinner. I did get to chat up on two of those occasions, breakfast and dinner, lunch was quiet, but I expected that to be. I actually spent more money on food yesterday than trains(something is wrong with me). Of course, being that I did not have a list going into this York, I sort of expected that to be the case. Something has actually got to grab you if you don't have a list, and all day yesterday I pretty much was browsing in the Orange Hall(for most of the day) and scooted over to the Purple Hall(but came back to Orange after).

Today, I did start in the Orange, and found a Lionel N&W Aux Tender from I think somewhere in the early 2000's. I had a seat for a bit after that and went over into the Member Halls. I finally found over in the Silver Hall two custom made building from a guy named Dave. We talked a bit and I bought both buildings off of him. One looks like it could be a pumping house, or some yard building(very small), and the other could be a two floor apartment or a yard office. I liked the look of both, that is why I bought them.

When I came back over it was about 1:10 or so, and I got some chocolate ice cream before finding Ed Boyle because I told Allan Miller I would help set up for the OGR meeting at 2. We got set up pretty quickly and it was a good to talk with Ed while doing so. After the meeting got out, I made my way to Z-Stuff and bought a signal(my first ever) and searched around for some vehicles. I have always been annoyed I guess you could say with not being able to find 1:48 autos, but I managed to find some very nice 1:43 autos. I picked up some 1930's-late 1940's autos(two trucks, one car). Someone gave me a lecture on forced perspective, and I believe that these auto's will serve nicely. I did want to find some sort of dump truck or such, but I will have to do a little bit more research on what I should be looking for as far as that is concerned.

Today was a big score as far as I am concerned, I even got to have some great conversation too boot. 

I’m enjoying the event. I have picked up a few buildings and vehicles. I picked up a Menards military flat with an army bus. I spent some time talking to my friend David Duhamel (Crescent Locomotive Works).  I bought a few of his building kits in April. He is helping with a few details. His stuff is amazing. He is very helpful also. I’m looking for wood sided reefers in purple boxes. Not having much luck. And I enjoyed the OGR meeting this afternoon.

I violated one of the York sacred rules.  See if you can figure out which one.

On Thursday I saw a Dept 56 Flatiron Building I wanted.  It was $200 and I was hoping to get it for $150.  It was down a little on my list so I decided to come back later if I had money left after I picked up a few higher things (Yup, you're right!).  Headed over to the Red Hall 1st thing Friday morning to pick it up.    On the way I ran into a club member (you know who you are!) and spoke for a few minutes.  I then went over to the vendor and there he was putting it in a bag for someone.  Arrggghhh!  Mistake #2 coming up.  I asked him how much he took for it.  $150!!!!   Double ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!    He offered me a Dept 56 Yankee Stadium.  Blasphemy.

Never again.  I swear I won't break this rule ever again.    

I did get a few MTH NASA cars and Lionel Ore cars that I needed.  And picked up the last of the GSDS shelves I needed to finish off the basement walls.

As a vendor in the Blue Hall, I've noticed that people are in a buying mood. 

I had a hard time getting away from my tables to do any shopping, but I still managed to find some things to bring home.

Got to Expo Center today around 11 a.m. Roamed the Blue, Silver, Red, Purple, White halls, and finally got to the Orange Hall around 4 p.m.  Walked over 10.000 steps today according to my cell phone's health app.   Bought 2 Weaver boxcars ( State of Maine Products and MOPAC ) which I've been wanting for a while now ... and at a great price!  Also bought a nicely detailed Mack B - 52 tractor and a nicely detailed 1950 Kenworth cabover tractor from Die Cast Direct in the Orange Hall.  Also purchased a 1941 black Caddy riddled with machine gun bullet holes ... obviously a Mafia hit job .. from Town and Country Hobbies in the Orange Hall.   I've been wanting to create a Mafia hit scene for many years,  now all I need is an O scale figure with a tommy gun.  A nice gentlemen in the Blue Hall sold me some well detailed freight car loads which he personally made.   

The two tractors and freight car loads will be shown in upcoming editions of TEAM TRACK TUESDAY. 

I was not able to finish browsing the Orange Hall before it closed at 5p.m. I will be back there first thing in the morning

All in all it was a great day for me at York!  Of course I've never had a bad day at York either.  The Eastern Division always does a super fine job with this show!!

As always having a great time with old friends, making new friends, finding things on and not on my list,  spending money, not being at work, and the best part there is still another day tomorrow.  Got lots of mid price stuff but no wow purchase yet but debating on picking up a premier steamer tomorrow.

My Christmas consist has all of the Lionel "Polar Railroad" scale freight cars. I had resisted the temptation to buy the continuation "Polar Express" Christmas freight cars. I broke down and located/purchased thee of four "Polar Express" freight cars. I also had fun helping to spend another RC3R member's money. Found a nice MTH Premier N&W Y6b, a dozen matching coal hoppers and a caboose. My older granddaughter got an add-on car for her WbB Girl's set that Santa will be loading in his sack in a couple of months.

Overall, my impression the attendance was light. Saw a lot of old friends and had a great time. Missed a couple I had hoped to say hi to.

One highlight was locating a set of Atlas Natty Boh reefer cars in the Orange Hall. I  WAS going to snap a picture, but the vendor put his hand over the cars and admonished me to put my camera away.  I apologized and moved on. FWIW, he was asking $795 each. Never got around to telling him that I already had them. My mistake thinking that photography was allowed in the Orange Hall. After that I didn't bother trying to take any pictures anywhere.

Surprising that he stopped you from taking a picture in the orange hall.  I'm pretty sure that photography is allowed in the Orange and Purple halls. At least that's what was being announced by the nice p.a. lady. Maybe he was embarrassed by the slight markup in price.

Funny that in all the years I've been going to York, I don't remember ever buying anything in the Blue Hall. This year, all 4 purchases I made were in the Blue Hall, which was my last stop. To make things even better, I had parked just outside of the Blue Hall that morning.

This was the first York meet in a number of years where I actually had a "Shopping List"! 

My wife had a Dept. 56 Winter scene on the front of our layout for years but after seeing the Menard's Sally's Restoration Shop on the layout, decided that her winter scene needed to go.

I ordered a Menard's Starbucks building, added track to make the outside loop bigger and have completely changed the scene to a more modern, realistic scene.

So I needed more people, freight another Miller Engineering Sign and a Southern Boxcar and Caboose to go along with my new MTH Imperial Southern Crescent Steam Loco & Tender. I want to use this train as a freight train. Maybe I'll add the passenger cars somewhere down the road.

I have also posted pictures of Thursday nights OGR Dinner at QSL.

Did anyone who attended this York(Oct 2018) notice if Lionel had the UP 1943 Spirit of the Union Pacific on display.   If so,  was the main body color all silver or was the center of the body where the American Flag is located painted in battleship gray?   I'm asking because I saw a photo of the METCA special run UP 9026 Spirit of the Union Pacific that was on display and the main body color looked all silver.   I'm hoping it was because this was a special run for them.   The real UP 1943  is painted battleship gray in the center body section where the American Flag is located.   I have the 1943 on order and I hope the paint is correct.   Thanks for any help

I am wondering what that "memo" is also....

So far , for me anyway, it’s been another magnificent York Meet! Unfortunately, since sometimes I think I’m still 25, I injured my knee while doing yard work on our irrigation system last week.  So I’m dragging my leg through the halls. I should have left the irrigation repair to the professionals!

Aside from the fun of greeting friends and making new ones, I hadn’t planned or expected to buy much of anything because I’m between layouts right now. Foolish me! Wednesday afternoon I went with a friend to do train watching in the Harrisburg area and we saw three Norfolk Southern Heritage units. My general rule is I only buy Heritage units that I actually see. So naturally, one of the first places I looked in the Orange Hall had one of the ones I saw. The MTH Norfolk and Southern ES44. And a deep discounted price. It ended up in my rental car trunk.

Then today I stumbled, literally, into Henning’s Trains booth and saw the new Lionel Reading RR ABBA F3 set. With the powered B unit and the Superbase powered B unit. I had been wanting an appropriate motive power to pull my lonely 8 car set of K-Line aluminum passenger cars I’ve had for several years. I was offered the “Traindiesel” price and I graciously accepted. A big ‘thank you’ to Gunrunner John for helping carry the load out to my car, saving me much pain and a couple of trips.

I also got a MTH Premier UP Dash 9 for the ‘Traindiesel price’ at JusTrains, who were kind enough to ship it to my home for free.

To add to the great time, at the MTH DCS meeting on Wednesday night I was the winner of a MTH Premier TOFC car for traveling the furthest to get to the meeting.

And it’s not over yet. I tailgated for lunch with my cousins today whom I haven’t seen for quite a while. We had some piping hot homemade meatball sandwiches and homemade potato salad and all the trimmings. It’s been a tradition for us at York since the 80s along with my late uncle. And just before the halls closed I picked up a pair of tasty morsels from MrMuffin’sTrains, Union Pacific ES44’s. Then had a jovial dinner with some Forum friends to close out the day. 

So what trouble will Traindiesel find himself in tomorrow?
Will the dastardly wallet goblins stop him in his tracks?

The only complaint I have about the York Meet is that eventually I have to go home.

Got here Thursday afternoon, so I just strolled through the Orange hall. Did go to Quaker Steak and Lube, but I was alone, so I just ate and ran. 

I got to the show an hour before opening Friday, and stayed to just about closing time. I keep to a pretty tight budget, so I really struggle to decide what I want. Don’t NEED anything, but saw a bunch of things I really liked. While wandering, I kept picking up diecast cars, especially Matchbox. I should stop doing that, but toy cars were my first love. 

Anyway, I finally pulled the trigger on a nice, gray 1666E w/2689W tender, two 2630 coaches and a 2631 observation car. Don’t think it has been run in a very long time, so it will get some TLC between now and Christmas, and I’ll hope for the best. I also grabbed a Centerline track cleaner. A little pricey, but I always liked the one I used for my HO layout, so I went with them again.

My back is pretty much shot, so I have a lot of trouble standing for any length of time. I actually brought my Roman chair from home, so I could stretch out my back a few times throughout the day. Still had trouble, but not nearly as bad as last year.

Don’t expect to return to the show today. I will probably head home by way of Strasburg, raiding antique shops as I go. A stop at the TCA museum is also on tap.

That if you want trains that last and parts are always around to buy the older stuff. That's the memo

Many sellers, primarily in Blue and Silver, have been clinging to the prices from the 1990s.  Some of these folks are finally realizing that the market has moved south on non-primo postwar, and especially on MPC and early LTI.

"Got the memo" means "got the word (or message)". I think some "old timers" may have gotten the message that high prices means you will be carting it home...again.

Got there for Thursday opening. Left show Friday around 2pm. I have almost a 325 mile drive. I noticed the crowds were good both Thursday and Friday. Saw some familiar faces.  All sellers were willing to negotiate prices. Bought two K-Line metal 18" Passenger Cars, K-Line 7-pc Heavyweight Passenger Set in Penn. (mint/never opened) in boxes- hoping for no zinc rot), K-Line Starlite Diner, a few buildings and a bunch of K-Line old catalogs. Postwar items still priced too high and everywhere!!! Overall good show.  

Arrived Thursday and found a Scale Polar Express boxcar. The caboose remains more elusive than Bigfoot. 

Had a good Legacy meeting and didn't get everything covered.

Some one found me a MTH premiere N&W 7 car passenger set for my J which will get a newly purchased GRJ chuff generator board. 

I thought the crowds were decent. Waiting for spring to see the changes.
