At first it was 'rail banked' saved for possible reopening if needed. Now, the Saluda Grade is doomed to extinction, discussions being held to convert into a hiking/biking trail. If you have never taken a ride down it, this video is one of the best:

Every other day, a 100 car coal train came down the mountain to the Belton power plant, and every other day 100 empties came back up. The man on the tractor, is Charles Pearson Sr, who fired Sante Fe's on the grade before WW II, and whose grandfather, Capt. Charles Pearson of the CSA, surveyed the grade, being given 1000 acres in Saluda for his efforts by the then governor of NC.
