I have been there, some time ago.  There were a number of pieces of rolling stock outside...l'd have to find photos to remind me of what is there...l remember a tunnel at the end of the grounds, and that the auto museum building was then closed for repairs, a big disappointment.  I walked through an RPO and at least one other pass. car. I may remember a Budweiser reefer on display.  Obviously, l need to go again.  If you get there, take lotsa photos and post them.

They have a great collection, arguably the best anywhere.  Their website points out that they have 70 locomotive, over half of which are one of a kind or sole survivors of their type.

They have a Big Boy, a DD40AX, a Santa Fe 2-10-4, an SP GS6, the only remaining Nickle Plate Hudson, the EMD FT 103 demonstrator diesel, the only remaining N&W Y6 (on loan to Virginia Museum of Transportation at the moment), a PRR GG1, a Milwaukee Road bipolar, a NYC Mohawk, a CB&Q Zephyr, a CB&Q E8, a C&O 2-8-4, and many other pieces of equipment.

A visit is well worth your time.

Hope to get out there next week during our 2-day private car stay in St.Louis. We arrive from Chicago on June 18 on the morning train from Chicago, stay until 3 PM the 20th. Our private car will be parked at the former St. Louis Union Station. Looks like a $50 cab ride out to the museum, though. Exploring the Amtrak option, take Amtrak to Kirkwood and cab from there.

Read about our trip here.

In all seriousness, be VERY careful around Union Station, especially after dark.

I agree,I go to Union Station late night every few months. Never had a problem, but being VERY careful is excellent  safety advice. I heard the same about the St.Louis train station. Fear of getting mugged is why I have not made the Amtrak trip from Chicago to St.Louis to see the museum. I will do it though eventually.
