I have inspected some later run cars and I did see that the 3 rail knuckles were truch mounted instead of the vestibule mount.  I did not have a chance to see if they changed the vestibule design.

Ben,

Do the GGD truck-mounted couplers stay together much better than the body-mounted ones?  If so, I may try and call GGD depot tomorrow and see if they have extras in their parts inventory.  The Alternative would be mounting the Kadee couplers to the body.

Spoke to 3rd Rail today, the receptionist explained their parts department will be shutdown for the next several weeks.  I will take the advice from Hot Water and switch the cars over to Kadee Couplers.  What type of body shank should I go with for these cars?

Don't know what you mean by "body shank", but I mounted all #805 Kadee assemblies on my GGD heavyweight cars. Hope you have 072 and larger curves, though.

Yes, fortunately, our club layout has 072 and larger curves.   I will go with the #805 couplers.  Will I need to drill and tap new mounting holes for the gearboxes?

Thanks

Yes, that is what I did at the time. You might want to visit the 3-Rail Scale (3RS) Forum for more in-depth details on how others had up-graded their various pieces of rolling stock to Kadee couplers.
