I'm having a heck of a time finding O scale gons that would be appropriate for scrap metal loading in a 1980s setting. I came up with the Lionel PS-5 (which is a heck of a nice model) and the Atlas Trainman 52' which can be redetailed - but I'd like some more variety. I was thinking about the old American Standard Railgons, but they're really too new for scrap service in the 80s.

Any suggestions on decent 50 foot O scale gons to look for?

There is an O Scale kit for an Evans Gondola by B.S.T. car shops.

The kit is the body and underframe with add on details. The undecorated car will allow you to weather and dent it as much as you like.

That is the closest thing available, until Atlas O is able to offer the Evans Gondola in O Scale ready to run. Atlas already has made the HO Scale Evans Gondola for the TrainMan line.
