Go to both company's websites and look up the item number and then google it.

I've been very satsified with M B Klein (www.modeltrainstuff.com). They have discounted prices - although not the most extreme you can find if you really shop around, but good prices - their service and response is impressive: usually if I order on-line before noon they ship the same day.

Western Depot one of our forum sponsors, always try to give the people who sponsor this forum a look first. Also have had very good luck with Ready to Roll Trains in Florida. Both on these are my LHS.
Sort of depends on where you are. Rick at Grand Central is a good guy and a good source.
You apparently live in New York City, and have Trainworld just a subway ride away. Visit their website. They advertise in most all of the model railroading magazines--all scales--and carry extensive stocks of Lionel, MTH, and all other major brands.
Outside of your area, there are many fine dealers you can mailorder from, and recommendations you might receive here, including my own, would tend to reflect a somewhat personal bias. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, of course, but it really kind of leaves you back where you started.
I always like to recommend dealers who advertise with us because those are the ones who are actively supporting the hobby in more ways than one.
Gryzboski, Charles Ro, Side Track Hobbies, Mercer Junction, and many others. Check out the places that support the forum with their advertising dollars.
For a transformer, especially the larger ones, shipping gets to be steep. If you are buying online, make sure you know how much the shipping is going to be. The price of the transformer might be a little more at one store but the shipping may be a LOT less. What I would do though is to find a local shop and go there yourself. You might start meeting "train buddies".

This question comes up a lot. Can we have a "FAQ" forum or page? I think it would be really helpful. I'm not complaining about seeing the posts, I just think that we could give people wanting this kind of information a better way to get it.

keep an eye on shipping charges.
some places charge the actual cost and some places have a flat rate shipping charge.
I just ordered a engine and the shipping cost is $30.00 to the west coast and the other company is $10.00. if not for the great price I would have went with the $10.00.
thank all you guys ,,ive bookmarked a few of the selections ,
