I wasn't expecting it, but my dealer didn't want his demo unit so he sold it to me since I was his first pre-order. I posted a picture below with all the LEDs glowing. The quick start guide made set up very easy and it is a lot of fun and a very intuitive app.

I just tried it and I don't like it at all. I had an engine run away when the app froze up.  I was trying to adjust the speed, and nothing was happening.  Then it jumped from 25 to 50 smph, and I couldn't get to to slow down right away.  Then I tried the whistle.  I  tapped the phone several times, but nothing happened.  Then the engine's speed jumps all the way up to 80 smph, and again I couldn't get to to slow. I hit the e-stop button on the screen and that didn't do anything, so I final;ly killed the power at the outlet.

All this system does is provide a solution for a non-existant problem.  The DCS handheld remote is a fine way to operate DCS trains.  Using your tablet/phone is nothing but a gimmick.

I'm not recommending this system to any of my customers.

Puulease!

I had the opportunity to try out the App at Trainfest this past weekend in Milwaukee. MTH had a couple iPad's set up but I chose to run the app from my iPhone. It worked flawlessly, and this was in a very crowded setting. The engine feedback was instantaneous and there were no app freezes or hangups. I am definitely sold on the operation and stability of the system.

I agree with Marty the smart keys are a lot easier to use with the app. You don't have to remember all those 3 letter abbreviations or scroll through withe the remote. One thing I did notice is that if you change a setting on the app, such as max speed,  the remote doesn't know that and vice versa.

Stuart,

Like anything new there is always trail and error....a learning curve along with potential software bugs that might need to be worked out...I am looking forward to the new app and hope it works as promoted...if not I am sure in time that MTH will get it to work as promised...I hope you don't give up on it just yet...it's not even release to the general public yet as far as I know...good luck going forward...BTW: Even though I enjoy and the new tech stuff...I still enjoy running my older engines too!!!!

I heard one logical reason for such a gimmick in an LCS\WIFI discussion. If you have a smartphone or tablet and desire extra remotes or need to replace one, the app is a lot less expensive than another remote.

A 3 TIU set-up require 3 of these?

Is there a password so guests with the app cannot hack in?

If used as an access point (MTH setting), there is password protection. If used on a home network, (Home setting), you have your network password.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition", available for purchase from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

I saw it briefly at Mercer Junction Saturday.  Talking with Dave, I think I am going to get one.  I only have one remote right now, and it is getting to be a pain running 3 engines at the same time.  So now is the time.  I have the free version on my iPad and like the looks of it.  I see I am not able to upgrade my iPhone 4 past version 7.1, so I can't put it on the phone.  im hoping  upgrade the phone, because it is the only digital camera I have, and the resolution is grainy.
