I assume your asking about the lights near the corners of the hood.

This is a GP9, but the position is the same:


Those are classification lights. On the protoype they have clear lenses with a manually operated mechanism behind that holds a red lens, green lens and no lens for white.

Normally, these are not illuminated unless:

The train is an extra, then white is displayed on the forward hood only of the lead locomotive.

If the train is sectioned with sections following, green is displayed on the forward hood only of the lead locomotive. On the final section's locomotive, the class lights will not be illuminated.

If the locomotive is the trailing unit of a pusher or light engine movement, red will be displayed on the rear hood only of the last locomotive only.
