After over a quarter of a century in the making the Grand Central Madison extension of the Long Island Railroad, also known as the Eastside Access has opened. Buried deep under Grand Central Terminal, the station is vast and is designed to move a large number of people, with large corridors, big platforms, and lots of escalators, elevators, and connections to the main part of Grand Central Terminal. The decor is a very good blend of the same design of the main terminal.

I seen pictures of this all over. How long is the escalator ride down to the lower platform? I don't think most people really understand just how deep underground they really are. I understand the M3's do not have enough power to climb the grade so they will not be used at all, only the M7's and M9's.

While I don’t know the length, it is reported that it takes a minute and a half one way (unless you’re a Dashing Dan - and you know that those who are late for their trains will do it in 15 seconds flat!!!). As for the depth, the LIRR tracks are 17 stories below street level!!!
