Just a quick question regarding grease and MTH engines. I just received a brand new MTH engine, and appears/sounds that it was not greased at the factory. I was advised by the store to use labelle or excelle grease, but since none of my local stores carry either of those, I was wondering if the woodland scenics Moly grease would do the job? I was just told to make sure the grease is plastic compatible. Is the woodland scenics moly grease reliable, or should I wait and order one of the others online? (I want to get the engine greased as quickly as possible, to make sure that the lack of grease is the only issue, and I don't need to send it back.

Thanks,

Mike

I just picked up a new MTH engine and the manual says it is greased at the factory and shouldn't need to be greased until 50 hours of use or 1 year.  If you're sure that grease is the issue, Moly grease is OK for plastic click on the link below for description.

Bill, if that were my engine, I would pull the shell and the motor(s) and make sure the drive and driven gears have adequate lube. I wonder why the grease is supposed to be plastic compatible when MTH uses all metal gears in their locos. Your local True Value stores have a red lithium based grease which is long lasting and won't spin off the gears. If the gears are noisy and there is adequate grease on the gears, then you have an issue that has to be addressed through the warranty system.

Do as Luke says.  Steam and Diesel have slight variations.  Becareful with pickup leads when doing diesels.  I pull motor and ensure grease is on worm and axle gear.  Many times it is just a matter of respreading the grease that is in the case.  Don't over fill.  I have seen the grease overflow into the motor opening for cooling and ultimately get on the commutator and short the motor.  G
