Great Northern railway

NYC T-3 box cab electric (disassembly, masking and painting).

Acquired this engine last year at one of the train shows.

The model was made by Alco models in 1974.

I got the PRR DD-1's at a really good price but this engine was under 100 bucks; can't pass that up!

Something different.

Disassembly.

4 screws secured the shell to the frame.

WOW: that is one big open frame motor.

Tenshodo had a similar motor in their Y-1 electrics.

I'm going to use this motor:

1)  the engine is small and won't pull many cars so shouldn't have to worry about overloading the decoder.

2)  Would be a lot of work to 'switch out' that motor to a can motor especially with that drive mechanism!

Never seen springs used as a power system.

Knurled shaft for the springs.

No way removing the springs from the frame so had to enlarge the loop on one end so the other loop could slide out.

This tool worked well to enlarge the loop.

Everything in it's respective order.

Drilled out the headlight and a hole in the top of the cab to route the 0401 LED's.

After cleaning all the parts, I almost forgot to drill out the marker lights.

Drilled so there are 4 holes in the marker lights.

Again, had to wash and 'air compressor' dry the parts.

I had the shell all taped and had to remove it to insure no metal fragments were left on the surfaces.

A hole drilled in the shell to route the marker light wires.

All cleaned and ready to tape electrical contact areas and keep 'over spray' when applying the green paint to the interior.

Also, applied black on all the parts below the shell.

Taped the outside truck wheels as the trucks do not come 'apart'.

Since there is insulation on the wheels these parts will only be 'air dried'.

Ready for painting.

You just keep coming up with more and more of them!  👍🏻

Painting every day, I leave the air brush end in thinner to dissolve any remaining paint that might be in the 'chambers'.

Took me a few attempts and tape thicknesses to get the proper 'curve'.

Not bad masking for the 'lightning stripes'; just cut some tape at an 'angle'.

The 'light grey' looks as dark as the 'dark grey' until...

the tape is removed.

I’ve been seeing scads of brass engines at shows for years, many I doubt have ever been run.  When you can get something you like at a great price, and do what you do, you have a brand new engine!

While getting some PRR heralds from Curt for my PRR DD-1 electrics, I took some pictures of his PRR layout.

That’s a very nice layout Curt has.  With all that the great railroad buildings and industries, I think I like the company houses best.  I don’t know why I always have to take a look at the company houses, they originally look the same.  Now, it is interesting to see what changes have been made to each in company towns that survived.  We have a few in our area.

NYC T-3 box cab electric (decaling).

This was difficult with the curved stripping on each end (and only one side is done!).

The decal stripes had to be cut 2-3 times to handle the curved end striping.

Putting decals over vents, also, is not easy!

There was a wire step located where the striping meet.

I should have put the 3rd stripe from the top to meet at the edge of one step to make all 4 more 'uniform' where they meet.

This concludes any more painting for awhile.

Still have lots to do with all the 0402 LED's, decoders and assembly for the UP GE #1 steam turbine, Virginian's 3 box cab electrics, PRR DD-1's electrics and the NYC T-3 electric.

Took about 4 hours counting 'shooting' the 'clear coat'.

The usual 'satin clear' added.

2 hours at 200 degrees.

Lots of cutting and that is, probably, only half of it!

PRR DD-1's.

Painted the headlight black and the bell gold.

Curt gave me some PPR heralds.

Did a quick 'dusting' of 'satin clear' over the heralds.

Engines still need painting.

6 logging engines.

The Solvaset has been evaporating quickly so I assumed it may be the 'supplied' brush so I removed it as it's too 'bulky' to applying the correct amount of fluid anyway.

Installing 0402 LED's in the 4 recently painted engines.

A slow process as one has to let the canopy glue dry before install more LED's.

I put black paint on the wires to hide the red wire for where it is exposed, ie; marker lights to hole in the super structure.

Also, makes good 'lenses'.

Virginian EL-3A 3 unit electric set.

The 2 end units get head lights.

Some tape to secure the wires while the glue dries.

I'm fond of 'lots of colors' so I install 'green' in all marker lights.

I'm glad I checked for a 'short' by connecting a 3rd wire to the super structure as one of the LED's wires was making contact with the interior of the marker light.  I should have put some thin CA on the LED's.

To strip the insulation on very small diameter wire I find it easiest to pull the wire under the blade on a wood surface versus trying to scrape the blade over the wire while the wire is stationary.

A 'signal tester' used to insure LED's are properly positioned and not creating any 'shorts'.

The headlight opening was large so I, previously, put some canopy glue over it to create a lens before installing the LED.

One marker light installed.

Thin CA helps insulate the wires by the LED.

It took a full day just to install the windows!

PRR DD-1 electrics.

The interiors of these were all smooth so one piece of clear plastic (from tops of Christmas card boxes) was taped to the windows.  This process didn't take long to install.

The front windows were difficult to access so individual pieces of plastic were glued using canopy glue.

Just one window could be glued 'at a time' to insure no movement while installing each window, let the canopy glue dry and then do another window.

The front side window also had to be individually glued.

With the hand rails soldered on the inside, the windows had to be trimmed 'just right' so they were flush to the surface.

UP GE#1 turbine diesel.

It was easiest to trim the front window 'glass' from the 'outside' and then use canopy glue to secure it from the inside.

The glue had to dry on one side before doing the other side.

The 2 front side windows needed special trimming and using canopy glue.

The remaining side windows could be taped.

The back window could not be accessed from the inside so I just used canopy glue to make the window.

To be 'truthful' the canopy glue windows are, probably, more realistic than the clear plastic!

Each side light has the 0402 LED's installed.

Lots of 'bumps' in the interior so each window had to be glued 'in place'.

Again, a 'slow process' as only one side could be done 'at a time' and 'ditto' on each front window.

A railroader from Dayton brought his Aerotrain to be 'checked' as it lost it's sound.

A new speaker was installed.

The Ross Club set up their modular layout at a retirement home in Hamilton, Ohio June 21-23.

Old 'control panel' on the wall with all the new 'circuit breakers' above it for DCC.

DCC and signals all route through the old 'control panel' since all the 'terminal strips' are located there.

The usual 'testing' of the layout before any arrivals 'paid off' as a 'jumper wire' was broke on the mainline.

I guess 45 year old layouts will 'do that'!

A good night: most trains were 'long' and only one car derailed and it had a lot of 'gung' on the wheel treads.

Multi-level view of 3 levels of the GNRW mainline which is, basically, a large helix with a 400' mainline along the outside walls of the basement.

The middle track has the Erie 2-8-8-8-2 triplex which I failed to get a video or picture 'of'.

Many of the cars are vintage metal Athearn/Varney and wood Silver Streak/Ambroid freight car kits.

All 'cabeese' have LED's or resistors to let the LCC signaling system know when the train has departed a 'block'.
