Stuff.

Finally getting to PM'ing the layout that I've been ignoring for the last several months.

Much quicker and easier to soak a paper towel in acetone and run the car over it several times!

Wheel cleaning 01

I've used this same method  for quite some time myself.   Works well.

If I can remember  🤔 , I believe I gave up the acetone ........well.....if I  can remember.....yes..... let's see .......test track  ,  spark from steam engine wheels  ,  rapid hot flash  , flaming paper towel and engine and track and table  ,  flaming hand after grabbing paper towel  ,  throwing paper towel on floor  (  not thinking  )  and screaming for Judy to bring the fire extinguisher.

I now use a very small amount of Zippo on the paper towel .  The method does work well but does not clean  as fast as acetone.

Be safe.  Have fun doing PM.

Virginian EL-3A electrics.

This unit electric set was imported by Alco models in 1978.

Again, this set was painted last Spring and is posted previously in this thread.

Video;

'Yard test' of the lead unit.

Pantographs and lead/trailing trucks will be added after all units are completed.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 85

Journals slots in frame had the paint scraped away for electrical contact.

Instead of springs for each journal a long wire is used.

Testing for any binds and no shorts.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 87

Motor and double gear boxes installed and DC tested.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 88

Brake shoes added.

They are plastic so were removed so the 200 degree cooking of the paint didn't melt them.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 89

I forgot that there are contacts on the insulated drivers and I had to remove the drivers to scrape off the paint on the contacts.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 90

Paint scraped off the contacts.

2 sets of contacts so all 4 drivers pick up 'juice'.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 91

Had to re-solder 2 of the driver retaining plate mounts with resistance soldering.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 92

Voltmeter test to insure all contacts are touching the drivers.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 93

Lead trucks paint removed where it contacts the axle to insure they 'roll'.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 94

I missed applying the number to one of the electrics.

This was the lead unit.  The center unit wasn't suppose to have a engine number and, last Spring, I labeled the center unit instead of the lead unit.  OH WELL: most people will not know that the center unit was not numbered; Probably most people would notice if it was missing versus having the number on it!

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 95

A 6 pin connector was made to go from the super structure to the frame.

The pin is marked in white but, still, I put the red/black on the outside, the orange/grey next and the headlight in the center so, even if the connectors were 'switched' the engine will not 'smoke' the decoder; it will just run backwards.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 96

All wires finished;  Headlight and interior light on the white wire, green marker lights on the green wire and a PFM speaker on the violet wires.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 97

Usually, I use TCS decoders in all my steam engines but they don't have one for electrics but Tsunami does.

Saved in roster.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 104

In the 'throttle' mode I had to page down to FX3 to turn on the marker lights.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 105

I forgot to put a resister in the headlight and 'toasted' the LED.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 106

New LED and resister added.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 107

All exposed wire 'taped over'.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 108

Interesting. Most parts are 'soldered on'; all the air tanks have screws to secure them to the frame.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 109

Much better.

Initially, I thought I 'fried' the decoder but that blue light on the decoder indicates 'juice is on'.

No use installing them during assembly and damaging them.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 116

Thought the FX3 function to turn on the marker lights was F3, nada, tried 13 and nada.

Went to the 'throttle' on the programming track and counted down all the option to FX3 which as 23.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 117

One engine 'down'  2 more to 'go'.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 118

No use spending a lot of $$ on more sound decoders; just use the cheaper 'non sound' decoders in the other 2 units.

A rubber universal was damaged in my GN W-1 electric.

Thought I'd try fixing it versus using rubber tubing.

Drilled holes, added some brass wire and then some heat shrink tubing to form the original 4 prong universal.

Mike,

Like most things, the first one always takes awhile but one gets proficient on the next one plus I use a 'schematic' to 'follow' so I don't have to keep reinventing the 'wheel'.

Virginian EL-3A electrics.

Did the 3rd (C) unit (other end) unit since it's similar to the A (front end) but no sound but has a headlight and marker lights and cab light.

Video running the 2 units 'yard test'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8cCHUn3-S0

The rear C unit runs slower in reverse.

Tried diagnosing it but nada; will work on it tomorrow.

Two non sound decoders for the B and C units.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 119

A little more organized since I had the A unit as a template.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 120

Also, no sound.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 121

Put the engine on the programming track and nada;

Using the voltmeter I found the original ground contact was not soldered.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 122

Software said it couldn't find the decoder in its listing but, paging through the 'listing' I found the decoder!!

Mark, I need a lot of experience and skill on these electrics

============================

Virginian EL-3A 3 unit electric set.

I have spent 10 hours today (no food breaks) trying to resolve random horn blasts on these soundtraxx decoders.

Videos:

Got a Tsunami sound decoder in the lead engine and a non sound soundtraxx decoder in the other 2 engines. The horn sounds by itself when operating all 3 engines. If I only run 2 engines (using the middle or the rear engine) with the lead engine no random horn sounds. I put a Digitrax decoder in the 3 engine and the same results. I then connected the 2nd and 3rd engine to one decoder via a wire connector but still getting random horn sounds. Weird. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When operating the 3 engines with all Soundtraxx, when the horn randomly blew the other 2 engines occasionally went into reverse.  That's is why I tried using a different decoder.

The horn blasts and when I manually remove the 3rd engine, the horn keeps silent!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY8QqV4v4DE

Only 2 engines and no problems:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXEOVydKpis

Here, I'm installing the decoder in the middle engine.

No lights on the center engine so just 4 wires to 'connect'.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 127

Programming track.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 128

I just copied the C (rear engine) data to this engine and saved it to the roster.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 129

Found 2 problems on why an engine was running slow in one direction.

Gear tubing rubbing on the center frame.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 130

Need to align the 'brake shoe' between the 2 sanding pipes carefully or they bind against the drivers.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 131

Had to re-solder 2 of the retaining plate mounts on another engine plus redo the one that I did but they came 'loose' again.

Recessed the mounts tiny amount to get more solder to the frame.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 131AVirginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 132

Tested to make sure no binds.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 133

Found 3 of the contacts to the insulated drivers were not making good contact.

Cleaned them and bent them for more pressure against the drivers.

This was making  2 of the engines stop due to bad electrical conductivity.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 134

Since the sound decoder worked with just 2 decoders I figured if I used a different decoder in the middle engine, the decoders won't interfere with each other.  Wrong.  That didn't work either.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 135

A Digitrax 126 was used for the middle engine.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 136

Same results with the Digitrax engine!

My last option I made a wire harness to connect the back engine with a decoder to the middle engine (removed its decoder) using 4 wires (hot, ground and motor).  I figured since the horn doesn't blow with 2 engines (and 2 decoders) running them having 2 engines on one decoder would solve the problem; nada.

ARGGGGG.

Virginian EL-3A electrics.

Some more testing:

Video:

Ran the 2 end units from Seattle to the upper 'staging yard' which is over 400' and they worked fine.

No lead/trailing trucks or pantographs yet.

Staging yard.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 138

Did another 'yard test' with the middle and back units.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 139

One decoder operating both units.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 140

They ran well.

Virginian EL-2A electrics ALCO 141

Of course it would be nice if all 3 ran well together without the horn blasting!

This is my first experience with Soundtraxx.

Maybe some kind of software problem.

I 'googled' about intermittent horn blowing but nada.
