Our PBS station has been showing "Great Scenic Rail Journeys" the last couple of weeks. So far, my favorites have been the Rocky Mountaineers (Canadian Rockies), the Western Maryland scenic tours, and the Royal Gorge tour in CO.

The WM tour showed the city of Cumberland, with a panoramic view of the city as the train winds over a river via curved girder bridge, with various elevations of roads and RR tracks, and the city itself and spectacular green mountains in background. I instantly imagined modeling this, though it would take some skills, but the result would be paradise on a pike. Does anyone know of any model railroader (in any scale) that has built a version of Cumberland?

I was just in Cumberland, and I agree that it's a great place to watch trains.  It would be even more amazing in the fall!  The 1309 (WMSR steam loco) is down for repairs right now.  Definitely worth going back when it's up and running.

I don't recall seeing a Cumberland-themed layout.  But another member of the Forum is building, or has built a layout based on Harpers Ferry, WV.  This is another location I visited on my trip that has plenty of trains, history, and gorgeous scenery.  Thanks for mentioning the show!  I set my DVR so I'll be watching some "Great Scenic" myself later this week!
