Hi. I have had a lionel 224E prewar engine in gunmetal for a while but never was able to find a matching gunmetal lionel 2224W tender. Apparently, it is very rare. However, I recently came across a post that stated that there were a lot of variations made in the year leading up to WWII where lionel mixed and matched a bunch of different pieces. One article suggested that lionel 224's were paired with 2666 tenders. I found a gunmetal grey 2666T tender, but I have not been able to find any documentation to suggest whether there ever was a gunmetal version of that car or if what I found is just a respray over a black tender. Any help on this would be appreciated.

No gunmetal 2666W tenders. 2689W, Yes
Most of the 1938-only 224E & all of the 1666E sets came with the gunmetal 2689. It's doubtful Lionel would have made a run of gunmetal 2666s after production of the black ones started & continued up to the war.

So was the only prewar o scale tender in gunmetal color the diecast 2224w? I am aware of the sheetmetal gunmetal tenders like the 2225, but those are not even close to scale.
Yes, gray 2224 tenders exist, but scarce. Post a pic.
That picture that Mongo posted is a fake. No plastic tenders were painted gray.

Their are others... the gunmetal 225E came with a 2225W or 2235W tender, the gunmetal 763 came with a 2263W or 263W oil tender or 2226W coal tender.

The 2224T/2224W were Gun Metal for 1 year only, in 1939. In 1940, they were all black tenders. The other gun metal tenders used, do not fit your criteria, (1689/2689’s). The one year only issue makes them scarce & hard to find.

Thanks. So the consensus is that the one I found is not a real variation. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to find a real gunmetal 2224w?

Auctions and places like York PA. This is a tough one. Been looking for 5-6 years now pretty hard, and have found 3, but condition or price kept me from acquiring, they are pricey buggers in C7-C8 condition.
what exactly is the Lionel "gunmetal" finish? Is it paint over a regular casting? I rarely see one that looks good they seem to always have this rough worn appearance unless I am just seeing bad examples.
