The answer is YES....All of the above.. I do find that I tend to run steam most of the time, at least in the last few years. It kind of goes in phases for my I guess. A few years back I ran F-3's all the time.. and I ran them FAST too.
Both, in 3 rail I have a 2056 and 1655 steamers from Lionel, and a pair of NYC 2333 F3 diesels. In 2 rail O, I have a NW2 and GP35 diesel. I enough seeing both run, espically my small live steamers in G scale on my little garden railway! But that is another topic. Mike
Steam, Diesel, and electric here. 3 Steam, 20+ Diesels, and 1 electric....so far. Want more of all three.
I change. One year NYC steam, 2nd year UP & Amtrak diesel. Right now I'm steam.
I only have one diesel, a MTH 44 tonner, the rest are steam. I'm always looking for Pennsy F3 ABA to add to my roster. I just like the nostalgia of steam.

I have 7 steam engines and 6 diesels. I run 4 steam and 5 diesels in my layout. Outside I run 1 steam and 1 diesel in the G scale when weather permits.
Steam....but a real soft spot for 1st Gen diesels.
20 locos(16 Steam/4 Diesel)
10 CPR Steam
4 CPR Diesel
4 CNR Steam
2 GN Steam
It's an great selection of my favorites
Except for 2 GG1s, it's all steam...mainly because I remember the last years of steam as a kid. I'd sit for hours at the Hollis, Long Island RR station watching it roar past. I rode behind a lot of GG1s in the '60s.
I run modern diesels on my layout. I do have one working steam engine that my father gave me years ago. I posted last month that I finally found some boxcars with sentimental value that I've been looking for over the years. I decided that it was only appropriate to run them with my father's steam engine on my layout. I really enjoyed having the steam engine on the layout! I liked it so much that I pre-ordered the K4 when the new MTH catalog was released this past week.
My children also have a few steam engines for under the Christmas tree. Harry Potter, Polar Express and Wizard of Oz. The only one I have ran on the layout was Harry Potter....and only because my daughter gave me puppy dog eyes.
