I was watching the show Storage Hunters, and one of the storage units had a train layout in it. It was a G gauge train with a steam locomotive, a couple of cars, some buildings and figurines. The layout looked like a grass mat on a table with an oval of track. As soon as the guy said he valued it at $2,000, I fell off my chair laughing. I need to contact the winning bidder to buy out my classic MPC Lionel collection

I saw a Pickers show where they blew by some old American Flyer trains, in the box. They never even mentioned them as a thing of interest.  I thought that was a little strange, but unrealistically inflating the publics value concept could be far more problematic for the hobby in the long run.

A corollary: Many people believe that, simply because a toy train may be old, it automatically has high intrinsic value.

The public has a similar issue with law suits: Courts nationally handle vast numbers every day, most of which go unreported and with varying results. My first job out was in the insurance industry and kick them out we did. However, if someone gets money from coffee in the lap, this sets very high expectations, so that many believe you have won the lottery simply if you get injured. Not true. But, the perception is there.

So, there are those if they see a 2034 loco, it is like coffee in the lap.

Best,  Mark

I don't worry or think about the prices but I really enjoy seeing some of the stuff they do dig up and the absolutely fantastic collections of junk and some valuable stuff that some of these people have accumulated over 30-40 years.  That to me is entertaining.  Wish I had ten or twenty acres with one or two barns that were filled with stuff!!  Of course my wife does not wish the same thing!!
