As of fairly recently, the owner of Pecos River Brass still had a few leftover 4-6-4's in 3-rail. He was selling them on eBay for a while. Prices were pretty reasonable. He was also selling 3-rail boxcars and assorted 2-rail and detail items. I bought a few of the boxcars, which closely resemble Atlas cars, and I thought about the 4-6-4 but I just didn't want to add another railroad to my mix.  If I remember right his name is Smith and he lives in El Paso, but that's about all I know. You might check eBay by searching for "Pecos" in both title and text - that's how I found it.

The nicely done Pecos River Brass 4-6-4 was from Santa Fe's 3450 Class. I believe The 3450-class locomotives actually started out as Pacifics but were modified and required a 2-axle trailing truck. They show up on eBay from time to time and were offered in 3-rail and some 2-rail, but the prices are all over the place.

MTH has done two Santa Fe 4-6-4's -- 3460 Blue Goose and the 3460-class non-shrouded Hudsons. Both are very nicely done and are offered with scale or hi-rail wheels. Both have been done in Proto-2 and Proto-3. The earlier releases occasionally show up on eBay.

BTW, Flash, you're right. Lionel should have done THAT Atlantic instead of re-painting the a PRR in ATSF lettering.

Allan

None of which, if I'm not mistaken, was for 3-rail.  I was quite aware of the precedents in O 2-rail....tantalizing, but not able to run on my layout.

If there is, indeed, prior O3R production of the ATSF Prairies, I....and others...would sure like to know more specifics.

Too elusive, I guess, even for a 'bucket list' at my age.
