Quick question: are the leading wheels on a Lionel 671 turbine loco unique to the turbine engines, or does it have any resemblance to other Lionel 6-wheel trucks?

I was going to research this on the Olsens Toy Trains website, but learned that they have been down since the big storm.

My train repair friend Ed bought a secondhand 671 needing parts and repair. The leading wheels are missing, the trailing truck is still there.

Has anyone tried substituting a 4-wheel truck on the front or back of a turbine loco and been satisfied with the appearance? Just wondering.

Why not? Isn't imagineering permitted? It's not exactly a scale loco to start with. 4-wheel trucks might look better IMO !

I think it might be "interesting" as a 4-8-6 or 6-8-4 or possibly a 4-8-4. The 6-wheel trucks are kind of silly looking because the wheels are so crowded and the center wheels don't have flanges. They have about the same wheelbase as a 4-wheel truck. Those 6-wheel trucks might look better under the tender!

It's not my loco, and my friend probably wants it original. But this will be his third turbine engine and if he gets it rebuilt, I may try to talk him into selling it to me. Maybe I'll have the only 4-8-4 turbine engine, thanks to special engineering to keep the axle loading within parameters.

Rob, Thanks for the info, I will pass it on to my friend.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I've changed the post title to ask if anyone has improvised a 4-8-4 turbine with postwar Lionel parts and been happy with the appearance.

The Pennsylvania Railroad's class S2 was a steam turbine locomotive ... The locomotive was to be a 4-8-4, but wartime restrictions on light steel alloys increased weight until six-wheel leading and trailing trucks were needed.

My train repair friend Ed restored this 671 "parts loco" to operating condition. Bought it for $40 at a train show. Until we get the original replacement parts, it's an 0-8-6 heavy switcher. (If it was mine, I might have tried making it into a 6-8-4 just for kicks).

Ed has a couple complete 2020 turbine locos and I see that the front and rear 6-wheel trucks look the same except for mounting details.
