Have you done it?

I have an older Williams BL2 in the Missouri Pacific scheme that I have always like, (MTH never painted their BL2 in Mopac colors).

I recently bought a MTH SD24 with PS3 very cheap.

I would like to know if the motors mount the same in the trucks? I would transplant all the electronics out of the MTH into the Williams BL2.

The key point being that the motors need speed tapes  and reader to operate in command mode.

Just an idea I was thinking about, haven't had a chance to look to see how the Williams trucks and motors screw together.

Dan,  I tried this swap with an early RK Dash 8 and a Williams E7. The motors actually screwed right into the other company's trucks but they don't quite mesh correctly. Mine ran fine most of the time but occasionally, under load they will 'jump gears' or something.

It would be better to just swap the electronics and add a MTH tach strip to the Williams flywheel...

It's not likely that the worm gear on the Williams and the MTH are the same, that's the sticking point.  It's very likely this will be a problem.

If I were going to do this transplant, I'd be inclined to use the Williams motors and rig up the tach encoder next to the flywheel.  The tach tapes are readily available, and you can make custom versions for exact speed matches.

Remember, NOTHING on the PS/3 board shares frame ground except the single power connection.  If you ground any other leads from the PS/3 board, the project may grind to a hasty halt with a dead board!
