Lou,

My school's engineering department has the professors either doing one of two things:

- They record themselves doing the lab and we use their data

- The students will do everything via simulation software

It is not ideal, but we can still learn information and generate reports.

Our program is work based learning.  The degrees are in MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems).  The labs are all hands on (e.g. how to thread a gold wire bonder or soldering 0402 components under a microscope).

Anyway, know that there are a number of engineers and educators here on the forum, including those who have small manufacturing businesses that supply us with needed components.  As a potential EE you should be following a fellow known as GUNRUNNERJOHN.  And there are manufacturers like Scott Mann from Sunset Third Rail and Steve Horvath from Atlas.

The resources here are vast.

Welcome from a fellow O scaler, EE, and SUNY grad (Maritime College, class of 1992).

Love the CNJ water tower, and the bridge.

Looks like a New York Central motif?

As you progress through your EE training, you'll find that there are plenty of neat tricks you can use on the layout.

Do you have plans for a working signal system? That would be a great place to "study" LED's, rectifiers, and transistor logic.

Welcome, Bryce.

I've been on the forum since its earliest days (we used to be assigned member numbers when it was a small group, and I'm member no. 76). Since all I've got is a 4x8 board, I don't post much but I lurk as often as I can and I've learned a lot from this varied and talented group of train folks here. Any question you ask will probably get answered here.

BTW, we share SUNY connections. My daughter got her undergrad degree from Oneonta, my wife and I graduated from Buffalo State, and I got my first master's at Stony Brook. The state schools are still an amazing bargain in higher education in New York.

Be well and stay safe in these trying times.

Chris

Mark, Chris S , gg1man, Joe,

Thank you!

Lou,

Sounds like a fun lab! I will certainly follow them as I plan to learn as much as I can!

Craig,

Sounds like a great idea! I've never been to York so that would be a fun experience.

Trainman2,

Thank you! I am a huge fan on the NYCRR and all her subsidiaries. I only have a handful of engines that are not related to the NYCRR. I have had a plan for a signal system since last summer but there has been no time between school and work. As you know, NJ is under quarantine/curfew due to COVID so I am back home.  Now I might have time to finally have time to do this as well as ~12 projects that are on the backburner.

Chris,

Thank you for the warm welcome. I would love to see your layout! Every time I see a new layout, I get inspiration. Even though I am from NJ, I believe that SUNY schools are top notch for education, cost, and ROI. Hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.

Bryce, same to you, we are all safe in Las Vegas.  Here is my outdoor layout, older video, outer loop now complete.  My indoor layout is still under construction (you never really finish a layout).  Hopefully video copies into the post.
