Greetings! Although I've been using this site for insight for quite awhile now, this is my first post on this forum. I recently purchased a Lionel 671/671w tender, the same kind that my late grandfather owned, so that my kids could enjoy it. The Engine runs great, just needs a good clean up. The tender however needs some love. The whistle sounds like a grinding noise, no whistle at all, see video below. I'm not all that familiar with train mechanics, so I'd appreciate any advice as to what might help fix the tender. I suspect that it needs oil, but I'm not sure where/how much should be applied. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The whistle is badly in need of lubrication.
The Lionel factory service manual is available on line.
Please read the material on servicing tender whistles.
Follow this LINK to get there.

There will be plenty of folks who will be glad to answer more specific questions.

I use light oil on the impeller end of the armature shaft.
I use Labelle 106 grease on the commutator end.
I put a light coating on the inside of the bearing hole in the brush plate, and a light coating on the shaft itself.

I usually unsolder some of the wires to facilitate removing the brush plate for service.
I don't recall whether this is absolutely necessary, or just my preference.

Can you solder?
