I often see a string of these type cars in the CSX Philly yard, a flat with 4 containers. Below is a picture of the same type of car in different container colors, they are orange in Philly. Any idea if these have a specific use? Trash train?
My guess would be trash, although the trash containers I have seen on NS trains in PA tend to big three big blue containers per flatcar. Best way to identify for certain, would be to get close to them on a hot day. Of course, that precludes knowing for sure for about 5 months.
Trash hauling is getting to be significant business for some railroads because trash is typically going to fewer but larger (and sometimes distant) landfills which are better managed for environmental containment ... I guess.
They run this type into CSX's Russell,Ky yard. From there they go to a dump site with a three track yard out towards Rush,Ky that is serviced on a branch line that is the remnants of the C&O's old Lexington Division that ran from Ashland,Ky to Lexington,Ky.
