Hi All,

I have this project that I've been assigned from the place I volunteer at and I need to reach out to the manufactures and I want to make sure I request and talk about the correct stuff. Also if you have info or experience on custom runs (O Scale) I would like to know about that too. The member who drew these has severe Alzheimers so he doesn't remember anything about it anymore, but interestingly enough gave me permission to use his drawings if I can pull this off.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm looking for some expertise in identifying these boxcars/reefers. I'm terrible at this kind of stuff from when it comes to specific details like I have no idea what differentiates a PS-1 and a PS-3 boxcar.

Anyway I'll have pictures posted below that we have from other custom runs from older members. One set is HO scale and the other is N scale.

Thanks

I am thinking the "papayas" would need to be covered up.

And why would that be?

I am far more interested in how the interchange of these reefers would occur with Mainland RR's. That would be one long barge ride.

Seriously, they are interesting and handsome cars, if a bit on the novelty side, and a market would exist, I would think.

I'll take my papayas au naturel, thank you very much.

Living on Maui I would buy a mess of these. How about a real beer car for your Hawaii friends. Even though they never really made a reefer here but they do make the beer. . DonUnknown

Don, I had a few of those when I was in Maui a couple years ago.  I would buy a couple of those cars also.

Send me an email (in my profile).  I consult on behalf of third rail and spent a few years as the TCA Convention Car Committee chair.  I've worked with MTH, Lionel, and Weaver (when it was still around).  Also, the current chair Stu Rankin (Notlionelllc) on the forum is the current chair.  He can help you as well.  Finally Peter Attona (PeterA) on the forum has done cars on behalf of TCA Desert Division for many years.  He is also an excellent resource.

We can discuss minimum runs, proformas, and the pros/cons of each manufacturer.

It's fun, if not a bit frustrating at moments!

All the real trains on Hawaii were narrow gauge. All pineapples and other fruit were shipped by narrow gauge direct to the plants to be canned or boxed for shipping on ships. No iced cars were used. Don

Yep, they sure were all narrow gauge in real life. Only On30 thing we have are these hand-built cars. Too bad they don't fit on the 3 rail track.

The O layout here is quite scale looking, but super fictional non-Hawaii and is pretty much whatever the main guy wanted to do since it's all his stuff along with his name is on the building. We aim more for fun and I think the kids enjoy it more that way especially with Thomas and friends or a Big Boy running around.

Well to answer your original question picture 2 is of a 40' steel reefer similar to the  type shown here.

Your pic #2:

An Atlas O similar car:

Your pic #1 is of a 40 wood sided "billboard reefer" like those shown here.

An Atlas O 40' wooden reefer:

Pictures 3 and 4 are of a 40' steel plug door box car as the type shown here.

Hope that helps.

My man exactly what I was looking for, well half of my request.

I had no idea what the names of those cars were called. I just had a feeling those pictures I posted were some type of reefer. Now I can properly name them when I enquire about them (so I don't sound too novice). I didn't notice the HO papaya picture 1 was a wooden reefer until you pointed it out.

I like the looks of picture 2 of the 40' steel reefer, reminds me of the PFE Steel Reefer's I saw in catalogs over a few years.

Thanks for the info.
