I recently got this crossing sign. It is quite tall, 8"+, and is of all metal construction. The base makes it pretty heavy. I don't think it is home made as the base is very nicely done. And lettering is also nicely done but looks hand lettered. Any thoughts?

No idea but I like it! Could be home made by the lettering. Maybe a repurposed base from something else?

There seems to be a rough version of the same sign on ebay. Person has no idea of manufacturer.
I looked at all of the railroad crossing listings on that evil auction site and the sign I have seems to be sort of Bing-like except on my sign the base is solid and the actual crossbucks themselves are wider than those on the Bing signs. And of course the lettering is different.

Definitely hand lettered, not rubber stamped or silk screened or whatever they did back in the day. So could be a repainted sign from someone like Bing.
I have been away from the internet for a few days so have been delayed in responding.
Yes the sign looks like it was lettered by hand. What I find interesting is that each half of the sign is done in a different font. As if two different people did the lettering. As a very old person with drafting skills, I would not have changed fonts on anything I was doing unless there was a very special reason.

It's totally homemade. Someone repurposed the base and stuck a stick in it and made the sign. Look at all the glue to hold it together. It's cool for that reason alone.
