Help me Pair up my Norfolk Southern Gp-9

That chessie engine is a GP-20.

How about another GP-9??  Actually, any four axle power should be okay, particularly since your current unit is in NS livery.  Personally, I'd MU it with either a RS-3 or RSD-5 since these were in fairly wide use when the GP-9 appeared on the scene.

Welcome Santa FE!! I think williams makes a dummy still in the NS. I don't know what else would look good with it maybe CSX or conrail. 

Thanks.  I thought about a dummy but might go with a different line so that I can mix it up from time to time instead of being solely Norfolk Southern.  The majority of my layout has B&0/Chessie, Norfolk Southern/N&W, and ATSF. 

Poppy...  Those are good suggestions about the RS-3 or 5s.  I will have to see what's available.

Train world has a whole bunch of the Williams gp9's. I believe they have a Norfolk southern non powered unit with a different road number for 89 dollars.

I have read on these forums you shouldent mix open frame motors and can motors. Identical motors and drive trains one may be faster than the other, put the slowest one in front. Two open frame motors together often run really well.

Dennis is right on that santa fe best go with maybe dummy engines if you can. I knew that but never thought to tell you. Now you can run two williams together with can motors or two lionel with pulmore motors but not williams or lionel won't play together.     

A Williams GP38 in the Norfolk Southern and/or Chessie System scheme would be the right ones to fit with your theme.

Decided to get another Williams GP-9.  Went with Western Maryland so we can pair it up or run it solo.

Now you should invest in a string of WM hoppers since the GPs hauled coal east from Elkins WVA and Gray PA to Port Covington in Baltimore.

They run together nicely.  My only nitpick with the Williams Gp-9 is the lights are very miniscule...........is yours like that too?  Any suggestions for boosting the lights?

Santa fe yes mine like that to most the guys wire the motor in series to get the lights to be brighter but that voids the warranty. You can put led's in or try a 14 volt bayonet bulb i discovered a few days ago the 14 volt is brighter then 12 volt but i think the 14 volt put out more watts is why. 

How about Conrail? NS owns most of it. I've seen NS switchers working with Conrail units in Oak Island yard in Newark NJ (though the CSX [the other owner of Conrail] mainline runs into it).

 

MTH has both powered and unpowered Conrail GP7's, "Railking Scale." Other Conrail 4-axle switchers, too.
