My 2010 MTH Premier Amtrak E-8 ABA set is no longer working properly now. Since the set didn't properly pass through one of my Ross switch tracks the engine is not functioning properly now. I can see the engine and send commands to it via the DCS remote but there is no sound and when I turn the remote wheel to speed set position 1 the engine jumps right to full speed. I tried fully resetting and deleting the engine and still same issues. I also tried re sending the sound file to the engine which I was successfully able to see and send the file to the engine with success but that still didn't resolve the problem. I can turn smoke on and off with out issues and the lights all seem to be working properly. The engine also responds when I change directions but same issue when I slide the wheel to speed position 1 it jumps right to full speed. I took apart the engine to see if I can smell burning boards but didn't notice anything unusual. I noticed that the PS2 electronic board seems to have 2 boards...would I need to replace both or could it just be one of the 2 that is causing my issue?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt,

It sounds more like one of the following:

  • A torn or faded tach tape, unless, of course, the stripes are painted on rather than on a tape
  • A problem with the gap between the tach reader and the stripes
  • A defective tach reader.

Assuming when you say the engine "didn't properly pass through one of my Ross switch tracks" you really mean that there was a short, then I'd lean towards either a defective tach reader or a problem with the PS2 board.

Any MTH authorized tech with a PS2 test fixture could narrow the problem down for you.

Barry, yes I meant it must have shorted when passing through the switch track. I'm thinking it would have to be the board because I don't get any sounds from the engine at all. The tach reader? is that the sensor that sits on top of the motor?? if so yes the black notches are painted on. I take it since the engine is over a year since I purchased it would not be covered under warranty? Do they fix boards or just replace them??

Matt,

It's a 3 volt board and, yes, it may be able to be repaired, depending on the nature of the problem. No sound is typically one of the following:

  • A break in the wire path between the 3 volt board and the speaker
  • A defective speaker
  • A defective audio amp.

The first two are relatively easy fixes. The audio amp should be done by an MTH-trained tech.

Thanks a bunch Marty! I will do just that. I have a MTH DDA40X PS2 that has a 9v board that needs to be serviced as well...maybe he can fix or offer suggestions on how to fix it because it is one of my most favorite engines and I am getting tired of looking at and not able to run it
