As mentioned before I have a new to me Lionel 2023 that I got to running well except for no reverse.  The engine has a vertically mounted motor with worm gear and all gears show very little wear.  The E unit cycles through the three positions but has no operation in reverse, just acts like neutral in reverse maybe indicating the E unit is okay.

I have cleaned the E unit and the drum is clean and rotates well and all wipers appear to be making good contact.  All wiring to the motor and E unit are as shown on the wiring diagram.  I have gotten many E units to work by cleaning on numerous occasions.

I wonder if the motor has a bad winding perhaps related to the reverse.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I reversed the motor leads and the motor ran in the opposite direction but when E unit cycled it would not run in reverse.  So it is not the motor.  I then put the leads in the original positions.

I worked over the E unit by cleaning with Deoxit, a powerful contact cleaner for electronics, and tried to adjust the tension of the finger contacts.  Still no reverse but at least I still have forward and two neutrals.

Taking an e-unit apart (and putting it back together) for cleaning and tuning isn't as hard as rumor has it. Remove the drum and bend all the fingers so that they make good contact with it. Clean gently with an eraser before bending. Clean the drum contacts with a green scrubbing pad. Reassemble and everything should work fine.
