I have an Atlas oil pump accessory ( same item recently reviewed by Eric Segal). It was on my previous layout and operated great powered by track power. I am now installing it on new layout and it will not operate from track power or accessory transformer ( Lionel XW 80, which is preferred solution). When connected to track or accessory transformer it just hums.I just realized it will work connected to a 9 V battery but I prefer to operate while layout is operating. Albeit this accessory is noisy and always has been it is rated 8v-20 v, Ac or Dc.

I did notice while watching Eric’s video the underside of this unit does not have the ‘ board’ he mentioned, and never has. The wires coming from motor are original factory installed.

I guess I could just replace motor or unit.

Any  help to understand why I cannot get unit to operate direct  would be appreciated.

That accessory has a DC motor and is why in it only hums when you put track or transformer power to it but works with the 9v battery. To get it run off you layout power, you'll need to add a rectifier between the power source and motor. I'll let one of the sparky's chime in on what kind of rectifier and where to get one. I had mine made by one of the EE's at my office, so can't tell you what you need exactly.

I captured the following from the video you reference and assume your unit is missing the board shown below:

So presumably you are simply connecting your 9V battery directly to the DC motor.

For less than $3 on eBay, free shipping from Asia, I suggest an AC-to-DC converter module.  This would allow you to operate from train transformer Accessory AC (e.g., 14-16V AC).  Screw-terminals on the AC input and DC output.    Photo was hijacked from another thread and says 12V DC output but use screwdriver to set to whatever voltage has a suitable motor speed.

As Jim1973 suggests, you could also perform the AC to DC conversion with just a 5-cent rectifier albeit without the ability to adjust motor speed.  Just using a rectifier alone might have some motor buzzing though from the video it sounds like a fairly noisy accessory from the gearbox so you might not hear the motor buzzing.
