Just got my new Southern Pacific E9's and they're a beauty, only problem is this is my first dummy AA unit and im not sure how to program it. It seems to only have come with 1 Legacy module. Should I give each car it's own ID and run it in a lash-up or do I just give them both the same ID and run it as an engine? Thanks for the help

Hello!
Yes, put both engines on the track and into PRG mode - Make sure they are back to back as you would run them normally.
go ahead and use the one module and program them both to the same number - switch both engines back to RUN and enjoy!
My VL Centipede works this way as well!
Paulie D : Glad to hear that the E series diesels are finally here and in peoples hands. Several have asked, and I'm interested too, about the wheel arrangement. Are all the wheels geared? What is the wheel configuration: Flanged/blind/flanged?, Flanged/flanged/blind? All wheels flanged? Just tire traction? and how many wheels? Per chance, any magnatraction? What kind of gap between the trucks and the frame? How about the end to end height? are they even?
I know: a lot of questions. A few pictures would be very helpful if possible.
If you can answer as many as you can would help us all to appreciate these diesels even more. Dennis M.
The other option is to give each it's own ID and the create a "lash-up" or MU (multiple unit). Then you can address the each engine and control the lights and smoke individually.
Set the powered unit engine on the track and follow the procedure to create a new id. Use the module. Then do the same for the dummy. Don't use #1 or #99. Test each engine.
Then place them both on the track and follow the procedure for an MU.
Thanks for the insight guys. Since it was pretty late and i had to wait for wifey to go to sleep before i snuck it in the basement i didn't give it a thorough look nor did i power it on. Dennis, i can tell you all three wheel sets are flanged and the trucks do pivit almost 90 degrees, i'm guessing thats why it's good for 0-36 but these babies are looooong and i would only pull long aluminums behind it so not sure why the 0-36 rating. There must be tire traction as they came with a set of traction tires. I will post the balance of my findings and photo's when i get home from the office tonight.
Thanks for the interest
Can you please comment on how many smoke units there are per unit. The photos in the catalog made it look like there might be more than one smoke unit per engine unit. Also, please comment on your thoughts about the sound set. I'm wondering if it will be similar to the sound set in Lionel's F3/F7s or if it might be a new or different sound set. Thank you!

I have been wondering the same thing as well! - Its a very large A unit for just 1 smoke unit I would think.
Paulie, when you get a chance and figure programing, etc., can you post photo's and possibly a video of these babies in action. I know everyone would appreciate it. Ii guess I have to wait until Oct-Nov for my MKT's.

This is what I have so far, Each 6 wheel truck has 4 powered 2 unpowered but flanged wheels. There are no rail sounds in the Dummy unit(Biggest Dissapointment) The build quality doesn't seem to be there, the plastic doors on the roof access hatch seems like really thin, cheap plastic. I'm not sure how many smoke units there are but there are two stacks per unit and it dose smoke like a champ, and the mars lights are kind of cool. I am somewhat disappointed I spent the $885.00 on these and didn't get two more ES44AC's or AC6000 but they are runnable. I will post pictures/videos soon.
Here is the video, it's quick but if you could hear the kids screaming in the background as it was my 4 year olds birthday
Too bad there are no semi fixed pilots.
Those would be real easy to covert to fixed pilots...... and no handrails to re bend
Those are beautiful units Paul. They are long aren't they. Thanks for posting video, you are going to have fun with those. I don't care what kind of pilots they have, I like Lionel's new E8's.

Very nice! Thanks for posting the video - much appreciated! From your video it looks like it probably has one smoke unit per engine.
thanks for the wheel arrangement info
Not having a speaker in the dummy is a real bummer. Those are expensive A units, I think that both should have sounds. I wonder if it is possible to install a speaker and a sound card?
The only thing I can think of Paul is that Lionel, with the smaller boards placed everything in the one A unit plus the E8's are much longer than the F units making room for components. So the only items in the dummy A units is lighting and the smoke unit.

That a very nice looking loco. I am sure you will enjoy it for years to come. I wonder if the colors match the Shasta cars from a few years ago. That would be a striking train.
Nice looking engines. I notice that Lionel correctly fitted the SP units with freight pilot and dynamic brake fan. Legacy units are great for passenger service, as they can really crawl down to a smooth prototypical stop and do not start with a jerk.
Paulie: Yes, the F3s & F7s also do not have sound in the dummy "A" units (neither do the "B"s for that matter). The "A"s & "B"s do have smoke units, but no RS boards.
I agree with you, the dummy units need Railsounds, otherwise the consist is dragging around "dead" units......or mighty quiet prime movers.......
Thanks for posting the video. They are very impressive diesel units.

And an electrocoupler.
Thanks for posting that video.
If you really want those SP locomotives to look even more accurate, you could purchase some grab irons from P&D or other similar detail parts suppliers and add them to the engineer & conductor side noses, just ahead of the windshields.
Am I seeing things, or are the road numbers on those units 6016 and 6019? If so, Lionel got the numbers wrong; those were used on SP's Alco PA locomotives. Their E-9s were actually numbered 6046 to 6054.
I like those smoke stacks on the SP. Is that something that was unique to SP? They didn't show those even in the Catalog picture.
Paulie - Those engines really look and sound good! I love legacy engines.

@John, They are correctly numbered x6046 and x6054
@Sean, They are spark arrestors, pretty cool looking

As Paulie D already posted, those are spark arrestor "add-ons", and should be available from P&D Hobby Shop. P&D stock all sorts of O SCale detail parts for both steam and diesel models. However, it is entirely possible that no other railroad BUT the SP used those spark arrestors on their E units.

That's good to know, it was hard to make out in the video.

Oh gotcha I had no idea they had those on the real engines. Did they come with the engine from Lionel?
Paulie,
Very nice engine's, thanks for posting the video !!!!!

Nice video.... The SP E-units are one of my personal favorites!
