I have decided to bite the bullet and make my own caboose but keep it simple. I plan on purchasing MTH steel caboose and repaint to CB&Q colors.

Here are my questions.

Mineral Red. I have sourced it at Home Depot, Could not find it under scalecoat paint or am I missing something?

Can anybody point me in the right direction for decals?

Roof color mineral red or black? I have pics with both.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with the MTH caboose you mention, but NO MTH caboose even comes close to the correct CB&Q caboose, ESPECIALLY the trucks.

Surprisingly, a K-Line caboose was pretty close, and then we added MTH "old time" passenger car trucks, and it came out looking quite nice. Not perfect, but with Kadee couplers, not bad.

The one I was thinking of using was a Premier steel Caboose. I know its not a perfect match but close. I am watching a K line GN Caboose on DASH. The one I plan on modelling was built in the late thirties and was retired as a BN numbered caboose. like I said, I am trying to keep it simple, if I had Malcolms skills it would be different .

May I suggest that you have Malcolm build you the CORRECT CB&Q caboose? Otherwise, try eBay, as there is always a Sunset/3rd Rail brass CB&Q caboose for sale, every few months. I have two of those Sunset/3rd Rail cabooses, in 3-Rail,  and they really are excellent.

The other CB&Q steel waycar is an Oriental, in brass.  Shows up on dabay occasionally.

Or, look for the All Nation "western caboose".  Can be found as a kit or built-up. Accurate wood-sided CB&Q waycar.

Or, better yet, LaBelle sells a kit for a coach, baggage and caboose.  They call it a drovers car, but it isn't.  It was used on mixed trains.

The original question was about color.  Depending on your era, Scalecoat II offers CB&Q Chinese Red.

A few waycars were painted in orange and a few in green.  For these, try BNSF orange or green.

For the traditional box car red/brown, look at oxide red, Tuscan red, roof brown, boxcar red, boxcar red I and boxcar red II.

Title:

CB&Q NE-10 13515

Description:

CB&Q NE-10 13515 westbound at Naperville, Illinois,   November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, this   one caught me off-guard. The NE-10's were the CB&Q's first all steel   waycars (caboose) , a group of 25 (#'s 13500-13524) were built at the   Burlington's Aurora, Illinois car shops, the last waycars built at Aurora.   All previous waycars were of steel underframe, wood body construction. These   were the only steel waycars to see extensive use with steam power. This   particular waycar was built in March, 1930 and became BN 11460. Around 1945,   some of the NE-10's received electric generators (axle-powered), lights, and   radios. As seen here, a wagon wheel radio antenna has been installed on the   roof, and a battery box is carried below the floor. When built, the NE-10's   were painted in the standard mineral red paint scheme. Later, some NE-10's   were painted in CB&Q's MOW Orange paint, as seen here, and later still, some   were painted in the silver paint scheme. These waycars replaced many of the   assigned waycars in Chicago - Denver freight service. Many of the wood   waycars were assigned to specific conductors, and this explains this waycar's   position between freight cars on this train. Upon arrival at Galesburg (crew   change point), the cars behind this waycar and the wood waycar at the end wil   be removed and the train will continue with this waycar carrying the markers.   The wood waycar will be set off on the Galesburg caboose track until its   assigned conductor marks up for a return trip. That's an interesting trailer   ahead of the waycar, a Bessemer open top, and the canvas cover is stecilled   B&LE, barely visible between the ladder rungs of the waycar.

That would work if I was modelling BN. But since the period I am modelling is late 50s to mid 60s BN colors won't work . MTH make a NE steel caboose in BN colors.

Thanks for the tip on the paint. I actually found mineral red in flat spray paint at home depot believe it or not. I knew about the slim pickings on Burlington decals. Thats why I put it out there. Black letering if I go the orange MoW scheme, white with the mineral red. I had the same issues finding ACL diesel hood decals.
