"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

The RFC train garden has a new standard scale layout this year as part of our holiday display, but it turns out parts of the track are not easily accessible for cleaning, and dirty track has become a recurring problem. I was unable to find a commercially-offered standard gauge track cleaning car, so I decided to source a spare chassis and try to make my own.

Which leads me to my ask: does anyone know of a suitable track cleaning mechanism (pad, spring, weights, etc.) that could be mounted on a donor chassis to clean the whole track while in operation? I suspect an O scale mechanism could be adapted (with wider pad, etc.), and I'm not adverse to DIY solutions. What say you (extra points for real life experience)?

@Steve Tyler This is how I made my standard gauge track cleaning car from a 512 gondola. I cut two square pieces of wood to hold the cleaning pad. Four holes were drilled through the wood pieces. I installed small bolts in the wood blocks to act as a clamp for the cleaning pad and to ride up through the floor of the gondola.

Four holes were drilled in the gondola floor so the pad assembly bolts could sick up inside. No nuts were installed inside the gondola. This allows the cleaning assembly to float along the track. I use a piece of chamois as the cleaning pad. The nuts on the bolts clamp the chamois in place. I then took a lumber load from a standard gauge flat car and drilled holes in the bottom to cover the bolts sticking up inside the car.

I run the car dry with no cleaning solution on the pad. The pictures below show the car details.
