I'm getting into original prewar tinplate in both O gauge and Standard gauge and have found that I like opening these things up to see how they tick.  I was wondering if anybody could help me find any reference material pertaining to prewar repair, service manuals, parts lists, etc.  I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks,
John.

The Greenberg book is pretty handy, but tough to find:

http://www.amazon.com/Greenbergs-Lionel-Prewar-Instruction-Sheets/dp/0897780590/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1386287551&sr=1-1&keywords=greenberg+prewar+lionel

This book has a number of parts lists from various years, as well as copies of all of the instruction sheets for the various locomotives and accessories.

Watch the auction sites or check out alibris.com...it turns up occasionally.

The standard work is John G. Hubbard's "Greenberg's Lionel Prewar Trains Repair and Operating Manual", 1984, paperback, out of print, and the prices you see it offered for are often pretty over the top.   It is a helpful book, covers repairs and wiring diagrams for locomotives, cars, track, and operating accessories.  Interesting reading and helpful stuff and maybe the best out there for prewar tinplate, but at 96 pages it's hardly encyclopedic.

A book that provides a lot of trouble-shooting advice is Greenburg's "Lionel Prewar Trains Repair and Operating Manual". This is a different title than the one mentioned above - they are complimentary.

Out of print, you may find one at ABE Books. I have found them to be a reliable source of out-of-print books.

I have managed to find copies of the previously mentioned books and they are good resources  but not exhaustive.  I have also found Olsen's website which is useful when operating.  Any other resources that anyone can think of would be appreciated.  I'm deeply entrenched in my  prewar studies and do not want to leave any stone unturned.

Thanks for the help thus far, keep the ideas coming,

John.
