Hello guys I want to do some modifications to my 6-28264. I want to move the pilot up from where it is currently at (Pic 1 & 2). There is a gap and I don't like it. My plan is to move the pilot up and that is about a 4mm movement (Pic 1). The problem is the coupler sits about 1-2mm above the pilot (Pic 2). I'd have to move the coupler up to make that move and that won't work. The only way I could make it work is if I cut into the pilot and I am not doing that. What I need to do is take the engine apart and remove the black plate (Pic 4) and measure everything so I can drill holes so I can mount the pilot to it. I have searched for a thread similar to my issue and I didn't find one. I'd also like to know if there is a guide somewhere on properly taking this specific engine apart. Thanks for the read and help. -Josh

Josh: This is actually one of Lionel's "easier" diesel to dis-assemble; much more-so than the early 2000s designs with TMCC.

In your last picture, at the "top" of the black metal plate, you'll notice a grey "valance" panel that hides some of the gap between the frame and the trucks. Over the front ruck, you'll see two black Phillips screws between that valance panel and the outer edge of the body; these two screws will be about over the front wheel-set and the aft wheel-set in that truck. You may also have to pull down on the bell and remove it for clearance.

The aft portion of the body appears to be held on with one large Phillips screw centered in the metal frame about under the aft "porch". I think you'll be able to remove the body shell once you remove these five screws ( I haven't dis-assembled mine lately-that's why I "think" you should be able to).

Good luck; the shell will likely want to catch around the antenna and various wires, but will come off eventually.
