Hello Everyone, I'm currently building a fastrack layout using lionel's \0-36 remote  control switches. Out of 6 switches (3-left/ 3-right), only 3 switches work. I'm using MTH Z-4000 transformer as power for switches. When I try to power switch using track power the switch won't light up or respond to controller. When I power up a switch that does work and connect the switch via a 10" straight track, the bad switch will power up, but it shorts out the rest of the layout. Any help appreciated!!................Rogerw.

The transformer is new (MTH Z-4000) I wired the switches first (for track power) BEFORE I wired track power to the track. I had only one power drop to the track. When I moved handle up on track one for track power, the red light on transformer came on. After troubleshooting every piece of track leading up to switches, that's when I determined that switches were bad. One of the switches disconnected from track works great with just accessory power wired into track power on switch. The other bad switches wouldn't work with accessory power or track power using jumpers that came with switch.

RogerW,

Make sure you are activating the Command Control switches as you install them in your layout, remember to push the small button on the Command Control FasTrack switch to activate the switch.  There have been some miswired switches and some damaged ones also, I definitely would return those rather than fixing them myself.

They should work NIB with out repairs.

Hello Pine Creek Railroad, I'm using the remote control switches, not the wireless remote control switches. I'm building a model railroad for one of my clients and they're getting a little antsy about returning so many (5- so far!!) switches back to the hobby shop. I plan on getting in touch with Lionel and the owner of the hobby shop to let them know what is going on with these switches.

Yep, that was me. I had two switches that were bad. They were OK with track power but wired incorrectly to run off constant voltage from an accessory transformer. It was an easy fix to make, I think the most time consuming part was removing all the sctews which hold the metal plate to the bottom of the switch.

"I exchanged several good emails with Lionel this morning. Turns out there was a batch of FasTrack switches delivered in November-December 2012 that were improperly wired and will not work correctly when wired for auxiliary power. They sent me a nicely detailed PDF with color photos showing how to identify the incorrectly wired switches and how to repair them. I've attached the PDF. The good news is one of my dead switches is indeed incorrectly wired so hopefully this will fix it. The bad news is my other dead switch is correctly wired. Hoping Lionel will have some more ideas for me to troubleshoot in the AM. "

Here's the thread: FasTrack Switches not receiving power

You could quickly test this possibility by removing the track power jumper and putting the switch back in place with no power. If it does not short the transformer, there's a good possibility you have some late 2012 switches. Then you can take the gazillion little screws and look inside.

Good luck! Let us know the outcome.

ps...My client's is happy also, It was getting expensive with time and money replacing those switches!!!

Roger,

Was it the miswiring or the resistor?  Glad you can move on with the project now. What a run of bad luck! I'd put a gremlin chaser on the layout
